First Guide to the Central Mountains中山經
《中山經》薄山之首,曰甘棗之山。共水出焉,而西流注于河。其上多杻木,其下有草焉,葵本而杏葉,黃華而莢實,名曰籜,可以已瞢。有獸焉,其狀如𤠢鼠而文題,其名曰㔮,食之已癭。
The head of the Boshan range in the First Guide to the Central Mountains is Mount Ganzao. The Gong River rises here and flows west into the Yellow River. On its heights there are many niu trees, and below there is a plant with the stalk of a mallow and the leaf of an apricot, yellow flowers, and pods for fruit. It is called tuo, and it can cure dimness of the eyes. There is a beast here shaped like a rat but with markings on its brow. It is called na, and one who eats it is cured of goiter.
又東二十里,曰歷兒之山,其上多橿,多櫔木,是木也,方莖而員葉,黃華而毛,其實如揀,服之不忘。
Twenty li further east lies Mount Li'er. On its heights there are many jiang trees and many li trees. This tree has a square stalk and round leaves, with yellow flowers that are downy. Its fruit is like the chinaberry, and one who wears it does not forget.
又東十五里,曰渠豬之山,其上多竹,渠豬之水出焉,而南流注于河。其中是多豪魚,狀如鮪,而赤喙赤尾赤羽,可以已白癬。
Fifteen li further east lies Mount Quzhu. On its heights there is much bamboo. The Quzhu River rises here and flows south into the Yellow River. In its waters there are many hao fish, shaped like the wei fish, with a red beak, a red tail, and red fins. They can cure white ringworm.
又東三十五里,曰蔥聾之山,其中多大谷,是多白堊,黑、青、黃堊。
Thirty-five li further east lies Mount Conglong. Within it there are many great valleys, and much white clay and black, blue, and yellow clay.
又東十五里,曰涹山,其上多赤銅,其陰多鐵。
Fifteen li further east lies Mount Wo. On its heights there is much red copper, and on its shaded side much iron.
又東七十里,曰脫扈之山。有草焉,其狀如葵葉而赤華,莢實,實如棕椶莢,名曰植楮,可以已癙,食之不眯。
Seventy li further east lies Mount Tuohu. There is a plant here shaped like a mallow leaf, with red flowers and pods for fruit. Its fruit is like the pod of a palm, and it is called zhizhu. It can cure sickness of the heart, and one who eats it is not caught by nightmares.
又東二十里,曰金星之山,多天嬰,其狀如龍骨,可以已痤。
Twenty li further east lies Mount Jinxing. There is much tianying, shaped like the bone of a dragon, and it can cure boils.
又東七十里,曰泰威之山,其中有穀,曰梟谷,其中多鐵。
Seventy li further east lies Mount Taiwei. Within it there is a valley called Xiaogu, and within that there is much iron.
又東十五里,曰橿谷之山,其中多赤銅。
Fifteen li further east lies Mount Jianggu. Within it there is much red copper.
又東百二十里,曰吳林之山,其中多葌草。
A hundred and twenty li further east lies Mount Wulin. Within it there is much jian grass.
又北三十里,曰牛首之山。有草焉,名曰鬼草,其葉如葵而赤莖,其秀如禾,服之不憂。勞水出焉,而西流注于潏水。是多飛魚,其狀如鮒魚,食之已痔衕。
Thirty li further north lies Mount Niushou. There is a plant here called guicao. Its leaf is like a mallow's and its stalk is red, and its ear is like grain. One who wears it is free of sorrow. The Lao River rises here and flows west into the Jue River. There are many feiyu here, shaped like a crucian carp, and one who eats them is cured of piles and flux.
又北四十里,曰霍山,其木多穀。有獸焉,其狀如貍,而白尾有鬛,名曰朏朏,養之可以已憂。
Forty li further north lies Mount Huo. Its trees are mostly paper mulberry. There is a beast here shaped like a wildcat but with a white tail and a mane. It is called feifei, and one who keeps it can be eased of sorrow.
又北五十二里,曰合谷之山,是多薝棘。
Fifty-two li further north lies Mount Hegu. There is much zhanji here.
又北三十五里,曰陰山,多礪石、文石。少水出焉,其中多彫棠,其葉如榆葉而方,其實如赤菽,食之已聾。
Thirty-five li further north lies Mount Yin. There is much whetstone and many patterned stones. The Shao River rises here. In its waters there is much diaotang, whose leaf is like an elm leaf but square, and whose fruit is like a red bean. One who eats it is cured of deafness.
又東北四百里,曰鼓鐙之山,多赤銅。有草焉,名曰榮草,其葉如柳,其本如雞卵,食之已風。
Four hundred li further northeast lies Mount Gudeng. There is much red copper. There is a plant here called rongcao. Its leaf is like a willow's and its root is like a hen's egg, and one who eats it is cured of the wind sickness.
凡薄山之首,白甘棗之山至于鼓鐙之山,凡十五山,六千六百七十里。歷兒、冢也,其祠禮:毛,太牢之具;縣嬰以吉玉。其餘十三者,毛用一羊,縣嬰用藻珪,瘞而不糈。藻珪者,藻玉也,方其下而銳其上,而中穿之加金。
In all, the head of the Boshan range runs from Mount Ganzao to Mount Gudeng, fifteen mountains in all, six thousand six hundred and seventy li. Mount Li'er is the chief mountain. The rite of sacrifice to it: the great offering is set out, whole in coat, and auspicious jade is hung up and presented. For the other thirteen, one sheep whole in coat is used, and a zaogui is hung up and presented and then buried, and no offering rice is used. The zaogui is a zao jade, square below and pointed above, pierced through the middle and set with gold.
