The Great Wilds: South大荒南經
南海之外，赤水之西，流沙之東，有獸，左右有首，名曰䟣踢。有三青獸相並，名曰雙雙。
Beyond the Southern Sea, west of the Red River and east of the Liusha, there is a beast with a head on the left and a head on the right, and it is called Chuti. There are three green beasts standing side by side, and they are called Shuangshuang.
有阿山者。南海之中，有汜天之山，赤水窮焉。
There is one called Mount A. In the Southern Sea there is Mount Sitian, and the Red River comes to its end there.
赤水之東，有蒼梧之野，舜與叔均之所葬也。爰有文貝、離俞、𩿨久、鷹、賈、委維、熊、羆、象、虎、豹、狼、視肉。
East of the Red River there are the wilds of Cangwu, where Shun and Shujun are buried. Here there are patterned cowries, liyu, jiujiu, hawks, jia, weiwei, bears, brown bears, elephants, tigers, leopards, wolves, and shirou.
有榮山，榮水出焉。黑水之南，有玄蛇，食麈。
There is Mount Rong, and the Rong River rises from it. South of the Black River there is a black snake, and it eats elk.
有巫山者，西有黃鳥。帝藥，八齋。黃鳥于巫山，司此玄蛇。
There is one called Mount Wu, and to its west there is a yellow bird. The medicines of the High God are kept in eight storehouses. The yellow bird is at Mount Wu, and it watches over this black snake.
大荒之中，有不庭之山，榮水窮焉。有人三身，帝俊妻娥皇，生此三身之國，姚姓，黍食，使四鳥。有淵四方，四隅皆達，北屬黑水，南屬大荒，北旁名曰少和之淵，南旁名曰從淵，舜之所浴也。
Within the Great Wilds there is Mount Buting, and the Rong River comes to its end there. There are people with three bodies. Ehuang, the wife of Dijun, gave birth to this land of Sanshen. They are of the Yao clan, they eat millet, and they drive four birds. There is a pool that is square, and its four corners all run through. To the north it joins the Black River, and to the south it joins the Great Wilds. Its northern side is called the pool of Shaohe, and its southern side is called the Cong pool, where Shun bathed.
又有成山，甘水窮焉。有季禺之國，顓頊之子，食黍。有羽民之國，其民皆生毛羽。有卵民之國，其民皆生卵。
There is also Mount Cheng, and the Gan River comes to its end there. There is the land of Jiyu, whose people are the sons of Zhuanxu, and they eat millet. There is the land of Yumin, and all its people are born with hair and feathers. There is the land of Luanmin, and all its people are born from eggs.
大荒之中，有不姜之山，黑水窮焉。又有賈山，汔水出焉。又有言山。又有登備之山。有恝恝之山。又有蒲山，澧水出焉。又有隗山，其西有丹，其東有玉。又南有山，漂水出焉。有尾山。有翠山。
Within the Great Wilds there is Mount Bujiang, and the Black River comes to its end there. There is also Mount Jia, and the Qi River rises from it. There is also Mount Yan. There is also Mount Dengbei. There is Mount Jiajia. There is also Mount Pu, and the Li River rises from it. There is also Mount Wei, and to its west there is cinnabar and to its east there is jade. To the south again there is a mountain, and the Piao River rises from it. There is Mount Wei. There is Mount Cui.
有盈民之國，於姓，黍食。又有人方食木葉。
There is the land of Yingmin. They are of the Yu clan and they eat millet. There are also people who are eating the leaves of trees.
有不死之國，阿姓，甘木是食。
There is a land of people who do not die. They are of the A clan, and they eat the ganmu tree.
大荒之中，有山名曰去痓。南極果，北不成，去痓果。
Within the Great Wilds there is a mountain named Quchi. The southern end is complete and the north is not complete, and Quchi completes it.
南海渚中，有神，人面，珥兩青蛇，踐兩赤蛇，曰不廷胡余。
On a sandbank in the Southern Sea there is a god with a human face. He wears two green snakes at his ears and treads on two red snakes, and he is called Butinghuyu.
有神名曰因因乎，南方曰因乎，來風曰乎民，處南極以出入風。
There is a god named Yinyinhu. The south is called Yinhu, and the wind that comes is called Humin. He dwells at the southern limit and lets the winds come and go.
有襄山。又有重陰之山。有人食獸，曰季釐。帝俊生季釐，故曰季釐之國。有緡淵。少昊生倍伐，倍伐降處緡淵。有水四方，名曰俊壇。
There is Mount Xiang. There is also Mount Chongyin. There are people who eat beasts, and they are called Jili. Dijun fathered Jili, and so it is called the land of Jili. There is the Min pool. Shaohao fathered Beifa, and Beifa came down and settled at the Min pool. There is a water that is square, and it is called Juntan.
有臷民之國。帝舜生無淫，降臷處，是謂巫臷民。巫臷民盼姓，食穀，不績不經，服也；不稼不穡，食也。爰有歌舞之鳥，鸞鳥自歌，鳳鳥自舞。爰有百獸，相群爰處。百穀所聚。
There is the land of Zhimin. Shun fathered Wuyin, who came down and settled at Zhi, and these are called the Wuzhimin. The Wuzhimin are of the Pan clan and they eat grain. They do not spin or weave, yet they are clothed; they do not sow or reap, yet they are fed. Here there are birds that sing and dance: the luan bird sings of itself and the phoenix dances of itself. Here there are the hundred beasts, and they live together in herds. It is where the hundred grains gather.
大荒之中，有山名曰融天，海水南入焉。
Within the Great Wilds there is a mountain named Rongtian, and the waters of the sea enter it from the south.
有人曰鑿齒，羿殺之。
There is a man called Zaochi, and Yi killed him.
有蜮山者，有蜮民之國，桑姓，食黍，射蜮是食。有人方扜弓射黃蛇，名曰蜮人。
There is one called Mount Yu (蜮), and there is the land of Yu-min (蜮). They are of the Sang clan, they eat millet, and they shoot the yu and eat it. There is a man drawing his bow and shooting a yellow snake, and he is called a Yu man.
有宋山者，有赤蛇，名曰育蛇。有木生山上，名曰楓木。楓木，蚩尤所棄其桎梏，是爲楓木。
There is one called Mount Song, and there is a red snake called Yushe. There is a tree that grows on top of the mountain, and it is called the fengmu tree. The fengmu is the fetters and manacles that Chiyou threw away, and they became the fengmu.
有人方齒虎尾，名曰祖狀之尸。
There is a man with teeth and the tail of a tiger, and he is called the corpse of Zuzhuang.
有小人，名曰焦僥之國，幾姓，嘉穀是食。
There are little people, and they are called the land of Jiaoyao. They are of the Ji clan, and they eat fine grain.
大荒之中，有山名㱙塗之山，青水窮焉。有雲雨之山，有木名曰欒。
Within the Great Wilds there is a mountain named Mount Xiutu, and the Qing River comes to its end there. There is Mount Yunyu, and there is a tree called the luan.
禹攻雲雨，有赤石焉生欒，黃本，赤枝，青葉，群帝焉取藥。
Yu attacked Yunyu, and there was a red stone there from which the luan grew. Its root is yellow, its branches are red, and its leaves are green, and the many high gods take their medicine from it.
有國曰伯服，顓頊生伯服，食黍。有鼬姓之國。有苕山。又有宗山。又有姓山。又有壑山。又有陳州山。又有東州山。又有白水山，白水出焉，而生白淵，昆吾之師所浴也。
There is a land called Bofu. Zhuanxu fathered Bofu, and they eat millet. There is a land of the You clan. There is Mount Tiao. There is also Mount Zong. There is also Mount Xing. There is also Mount He. There is also Mount Chenzhou. There is also Mount Dongzhou. There is also Mount Baishui, and the Bai River rises from it and forms the Bai pool, where the army of Kunwu bathed.

One account writes: "There is a land called Zhuanxu, and he fathered Bofu."
有人名曰張弘，在海上捕魚。海中有張弘之國，食魚，使四鳥。
There is a man named Zhanghong, and he catches fish out on the sea. In the sea there is the land of Zhanghong. They eat fish and drive four birds.
有人焉，鳥喙，有翼，方捕魚于海。
There are people there with the beaks of birds and with wings, and they are catching fish in the sea.
大荒之中，有人名曰驩頭。鯀妻士敬，士敬子曰炎融，生驩頭。驩頭人面鳥喙，有翼，食海中魚，杖翼而行。維宜芑苣，穋楊是食。有驩頭之國。
Within the Great Wilds there is a man named Huantou. Gun's wife was Shijing, and Shijing's son was called Yanrong, who fathered Huantou. Huantou has a human face and the beak of a bird, and he has wings. He eats the fish of the sea and walks leaning on his wings. He eats only qi and ju, late grain and willow. There is the land of Huantou.
帝堯、帝嚳、帝舜葬于岳山。爰有文貝、離俞、𩿨久、鷹、賈、延維、視肉、熊、羆、虎、豹；朱木，赤枝，青華，玄實。有申山者。
Yao, Ku, and Shun are buried on Mount Yue. Here there are patterned cowries, liyu, jiujiu, hawks, jia, yanwei, shirou, bears, brown bears, tigers, and leopards. The zhumu tree has red branches, green flowers, and black fruit. There is one called Mount Shen.
大荒之中，有山名曰天臺，海水南入焉。
Within the Great Wilds there is a mountain named Tiantai, and the waters of the sea enter it from the south.
東南海之外，甘水之間，有羲和之國。有女子名曰羲和，方浴日於甘淵。羲和者，帝俊之妻，生十日。
Beyond the southeastern sea, among the waters of the Gan, lies the land of Xihe. There is a woman named Xihe, and she is bathing the suns in the Gan pool. Xihe is the wife of Dijun, and she gave birth to the ten suns.
有蓋猶之山者，其上有甘柤，枝幹皆赤，黃葉，白華，黑實。東又有甘華，枝幹皆赤，黃葉。有青馬，有赤馬，名曰三騅。有視肉。
There is one called Mount Gaiyou. On top of it there is the ganzha tree, and its branches and trunk are all red, its leaves yellow, its flowers white, and its fruit black. To the east there is also the ganhua tree, and its branches and trunk are all red and its leaves yellow. There is a green horse, and there is a red horse, and they are called Sanzhui. There is shirou.
有小人，名曰菌人。
There are little people, and they are called Junren.
有南類之山，爰有遺玉、青馬、三騅、視肉、甘華，百穀所在。
There is Mount Nanlei. Here there are youyu jade, green horses, Sanzhui, shirou, and ganhua, and it is where the hundred grains are.
