2The memorial of Shepopoda

"To the great lord of the kingdom of Song, the Greatly Auspicious Son of Heaven, at your feet. Reverent homage to the one of all-knowing wisdom, who rests in peace. As teacher of gods and men he brought the four demons to submit and attained perfect enlightenment. He turned the honored wheel of the Law and carried living beings across to freedom, and when his teaching was complete he entered nirvana. His relics spread abroad, and stupas beyond measure were raised and adorned with many jewels like Mount Sumeru. The scriptures and the Law spread abroad as the sun shines and gives light, and pure monks beyond measure are like the stars ranged in the sky. The borders of your land are wide and great and your people are many, and your palace halls and city walls are like the palace of Daoli heaven. He is named the Greatly Auspicious Son of Heaven of the great kingdom of Yangzhou under the great Song. He dwells at peace in its midst, he succeeds the sages of old, and he is king over the four seas, and within Jambudvipa there is none that does not come and submit. He gives all to drink of this water everywhere, and though I am far away I too am moistened by its holy flow. Therefore, though the great sea lies between us, I have always been your subject from afar. I pray that you look upon my utmost sincerity, and take pity and receive it. If I am granted your leave, I shall send messengers year by year. If there is anything you need, I shall offer whatever you command. I humbly pray that you believe and receive this and give rise to no other thought. Now I send the chief envoy Fodatuopo and the second envoy Gedi to set forth my small sincerity, and they bow their heads and do reverence at the feet of the Greatly Auspicious Son of Heaven. I pray that what Tuopo reports be believed and received, and that all he asks be granted. Now I offer small things to show my small heart."

3The kingdom of Shizi

4The letter of the king of Shizi

"I respectfully address the bright ruler of the great Song. Though mountains and seas quite divide us, word passes between us from time to time. I have humbly heard that the way and the virtue of the emperor are high and far, that he covers and bears up all as heaven and earth do, and that his bright shining is level with the sun and the moon. Beyond the four seas there is nowhere that does not submit, and the kings of the lands round about all send messengers with offerings to show their sincerity in turning to his virtue. Some float on the sea for three years and some walk by land for a thousand days. They fear his majesty and long for his virtue, and none is too far to come. From my forebears onward we have held the cultivation of virtue to be the right way, and without severity there was order. We serve the Three Jewels, and by the Way we save all under heaven. We rejoice in the good that others do as though the blessing were our own. We wish to spread the true Law together with the Son of Heaven, and to save those who are hard to teach. Therefore I have entrusted the matter to four men of the Way and have sent two laymen to carry an image on an ivory stand (臺) as a pledge of faith. When the messengers return, I pray that you send down your word."

5Tribute again

By the twelfth year it again sent an envoy with tribute.
