Song Shu Yiman Zhuan (Accounts of the Yi and Man Peoples in the Book of Song) Complete in one volume The neighbours across the sea as the Song of the Southern dynasties saw them. Here are the tribute of Go Ryeon, King Jangsu of Goguryeo, and the affair of Feng Hong; the notice of Baekje taking Liaoxi; the memorials of the five kings of Wa — Chan, Jin, Je, Heung and Mu; and the memorials that the many kingdoms of the Southern Sea sent up out of their faith in the Buddha, down to Huilin's Treatise on Equal Goodness — the record of the sea roads of the fifth century.

1The Kingdom of Wa

The Kingdom of Wa lies in the great sea to the south-east of Goguryeo, and age after age it fulfils its tribute duties.

2The tribute of Chan of Wa

In the second year of Yongchu under Gaozu a decree said, "Chan of Wa (倭讚) fulfils his tribute across ten thousand li. Sincerity from so far off should be made plain, and offices may be granted to him." In the second year of Yuanjia under Taizu, Chan again sent his marshal Jo Dal to present a memorial and offer local products.

3What Jin of Wa called himself

Chan died and his younger brother Jin (珍) ascended the throne, and sent envoys to offer tribute. He called himself Commissioner Bearing the Tally, Governor of All Military Affairs of the six countries of Wa, Baekje, Silla, Imna, Jinhan and Mohan, Great General Who Quiets the East, and King of Wa, and in a memorial he asked to be granted the offices in proper form. A decree granted him General Who Quiets the East and King of Wa. Jin also asked that Wa Su and twelve others be granted in proper form the titles of General Who Pacifies the West, General Who Conquers the Caitiffs, General of the Crowning Army and General Who Upholds the State, and a decree allowed it all.

4Je of Wa

In the twentieth year Je (濟), King of Wa, sent envoys to present tribute, and he was again made General Who Quiets the East and King of Wa. In the twenty-eighth year there were added to him Commissioner Bearing the Tally and Governor of All Military Affairs of the six countries of Wa, Silla, Imna, Gara, Jinhan and Mohan, while General Who Quiets the East remained as before; and the twenty-three men whose names he sent up were granted posts in the army and in the commanderies as well.

5Heung of Wa

Je died, and his heir Heung (興) sent envoys to offer tribute. In the sixth year of Daming under Shizu a decree said, "Heung, heir of the King of Wa, has borne loyalty age after age and made a bulwark on the outer sea. He upholds the teaching, keeps his borders at peace, and respectfully fulfils his tribute duties. He has newly succeeded to the work of the frontier, and a rank and title should be granted him. He may be made General Who Quiets the East and King of Wa."

6The memorial of Mu of Wa

Heung died and his younger brother Mu (武) ascended the throne, and called himself Commissioner Bearing the Tally, Governor of All Military Affairs of the seven countries of Wa, Baekje, Silla, Imna, Gara, Jinhan and Mohan, Great General Who Quiets the East, and King of Wa. In the second year of Shengming under Emperor Shun he sent envoys with a memorial: "The country given me lies apart and far away, and it makes a bulwark on the outside. From the time of my forefathers they put on armour and helmet with their own hands and crossed mountains and rivers, with no leisure to rest in peace. In the east they struck fifty-five countries of the Mo people (毛人); in the west they brought sixty-six countries of the many Yi to submit; and crossing the sea to the north they went and settled ninety-five countries. The royal way was harmonious and at ease, the land was widened and the royal domain set far off, and age after age they came to court and did not fail in any year. Though I am of the lowest folly (下愚), unworthily I carry on the thread of those before me, and drive and lead those under my rule, honouring and looking up to the pole of heaven (天極). I took the road by way of Baekje and fitted out my ships. But Guryeo (句驪) is without the Way and plots to swallow us up; it plunders the border and cuts men down without ceasing, so that we are always held back and lose the good winds. Though we say we are setting out on the road, sometimes it is open and sometimes it is not. My late father Je was truly enraged that the enemy blocked the road to heaven. A million bowmen were stirred by the sound of righteousness and he was about to make a great rising, when of a sudden I lost my father and my elder brother, so that the merit all but finished did not gain its last basketful. I was in mourning and did not move armour or arms, and so I rested and did not win. Now I wish to temper armour and train troops and to carry out the will of my father and my elder brother. Righteous men and tiger-brave warriors will offer their merit in the civil order and in the military, and though the naked blade cross before them they will not turn aside. If by the Emperor's virtue, which covers and carries all, I may break this strong enemy and settle the trouble of this quarter, I will not fall short of the merit of those before me. I make bold to call myself for the time being Commander Unequalled in Honour, and to grant the rest their offices for the time being as well, to urge them on to loyal fidelity."

7Great General Who Quiets the East, King of Wa

A decree granted Mu the offices of Commissioner Bearing the Tally, Governor of All Military Affairs of the six countries of Wa, Silla, Imna, Gara, Jinhan and Mohan, Great General Who Quiets the East, and King of Wa.
