The State of Lelang
1Where Lelang was is not clear
The State of Lelang.
In the time of Former Han, Lelang Commandery was first set up. Ying Shao says: 'It is the old state of Joseon.'
A note to the New Book of Tang says: "Pyongyang Fortress is the Lelang Commandery of old Han."
The Guksa says: "In the thirtieth year of Hyeokgeose, people of Lelang came and submitted."
Also, in the fourth year of King Norye, the third king, King Muhyul, the third king of Goguryeo, attacked Lelang and destroyed it. Its people, together with the people of Daifang〔This is North Daifang.〕, submitted to Silla.
Also, in the twenty-seventh year of King Muhyul, Emperor Guangwu sent an envoy to attack Lelang, took its land, and made it commanderies and counties. The land south of the Salsu belonged to Han.
〔According to the passages above, it is fitting to say that Lelang is Pyongyang Fortress. Some also say that Lelang is the border of the Malgal below Mount Jungdu, and that the Salsu is the present Daedong River. Which is right is not clear.〕
Also, the words of Onjo of Baekje say, 'To the east is Lelang and to the north is Malgal.' So it was probably the land of a county belonging to Lelang Commandery in the time of old Han.
The people of Silla also called it Lelang. So the present dynasty has carried this on and uses the title Lady of Lelang Commandery.
Also, when Taejo gave his daughter to Gim Bu (金傅), she too was called Princess Lelang.
