Samguk Yusa (Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms) Marvels, Part One A collection of tales of the Three Kingdoms period, compiled by Iryeon, a monk of Goryeo. He gathered the stories the official histories had cast aside. It is the oldest book that carries the myth of Dangun.

In the third year of Yongping (永平), a gyeongsin year〔Some say the sixth year of Zhongyuan, but this is wrong. Zhongyuan ended with its second year.〕, on the fourth day of the eighth month, Hogong (瓠公) was walking at night in the village west of Wolseong (月城) when he saw a great light shining brightly in Sirim (始林)〔Some copies have Gurim.〕. A purple cloud hung down from heaven to earth, and in the cloud a golden chest hung on the branch of a tree, with light coming out of the chest. Also a white cock was crowing beneath the tree.

He reported this to the king, and the king went out to the grove and opened the chest. A boy was lying there, and at once he rose up. Because it was like the story of Hyeokgeose, following those words he was named Alji (閼智). Alji is a word of the native tongue for a small child.

He was carried in arms back to the palace, and birds and beasts followed behind, leaping and dancing for joy. The king chose an auspicious day and invested him as crown prince, but later he yielded to Pasa (婆娑) and did not ascend the royal throne.
