Jukjirang in the reign of King Hyoso.〔Also written Jungman, and also named Jigwan.〕

In the reign of the thirty-second king, King Hyoso, among the followers of Jungmannang there was Deugo〔Also called Gok.〕, of the rank of geupgan.

His name was entered in the register of the hwarang and he came to serve every day, but for ten days he did not appear.

The nang called his mother and asked, "Where is your son?"

The mother said, "Ikseon of Moryang, of the rank of agan, the dangjeon (幢典), picked my son as keeper of the storehouse at Busan Fortress. He had to hurry off, and the road was pressing, so he had no time to take his leave of you."

The nang said, "If your son had gone on private business, there would be no need to seek him out. But now he has gone on public business, so I must go and treat him."

Then he took a box of tongue cakes and a jar of wine, and taking his servants〔In the native tongue they are called gaejilji, which means slaves.〕 set out.

One hundred thirty-seven of his followers also put on their full dress and went with him.

2Ikseon's son freezes to death

When he reached Busan Fortress, he asked the gatekeeper where Deugo was.

"He is now working in Ikseon's field, as the rule requires."

The nang went to the field and treated him with the wine and cakes he had brought.

He asked Ikseon for leave so that they might return together, but Ikseon flatly refused and would not allow it.

At that time the clerk Ganjin was collecting thirty seok of grain from Neungjeol in Chuhwa Commandery and sending it into the fortress.

He admired the nang's manner of valuing a man of worth, and looked down on Ikseon's stubborn refusal, so he gave the thirty seok of grain in his charge to Ikseon to support the request.

Still Ikseon would not allow it. Only when he was also given the horse and saddle gear of Jinjeol, of the rank of saji, did he consent.

The hwaju of the court heard of this and sent a messenger to seize Ikseon and wash away his filth. Ikseon fled and hid, so the messenger seized his eldest son and took him away.

It was a bitterly cold day in midwinter. They washed him in the pond inside the fortress, and he froze to death on the spot.

When the great king heard of it, he gave a command that every man of Moryang Village who held office be driven out and never again attached to a government office, and that they be forbidden to wear the dark robe. Any who had become a monk was not to enter a temple with bell and drum.

The descendants of the clerk Ganjin were made pyeongjeong hoson and marked out for honor.

At that time Dharma Master Wonchuk was a man of high virtue in Haedong, but because he was a man of Moryang Village he was not given a monastic office.

At first, when Lord Suljong was made Protector of Sakju and was about to go to his post, there was fighting in the Three Han, so three thousand horsemen were sent to escort him.

On the way he came to Jukji Ridge, where a lay devotee was leveling the road over the ridge.

The lord saw him and admired him, and the lay devotee too thought well of the lord's shining majesty, and each felt something for the other in his heart.

About a month after the lord reached his province and took up its rule, he dreamed that the lay devotee came into his room, and his wife had the same dream.

Startled and thinking it stranger still, the next day he sent a man to ask after the lay devotee.

The people said, "The lay devotee died some days ago."

The messenger came back and told him, and the day of his death was the same as the day of the dream.

The lord said, "It must be that the lay devotee is to be born into my house."

He sent soldiers again to bury him on the northern peak above the ridge, and had a stone Maitreya made and set before the grave.

His wife had conceived from the day of the dream. When the child was born, he was named Jukji (竹旨) after the ridge.

When he grew up he entered office. With Lord Yusin he served as deputy commander and united the Three Han, and through the four reigns of Jindeok, Taejong, Munmu, and Sinmun he was chief minister and kept the state at peace.

At first Deugogok, longing for the nang, composed a song.
