Samguk Yusa (Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms) Pagodas and Images, Part Four A collection of tales of the Three Kingdoms period, compiled by Iryeon, a monk of Goryeo. He gathered the stories the official histories had cast aside. It is the oldest book that carries the myth of Dangun.

1Digging where a dream directed, a stone Maitreya came out

In the time of Queen Seondeok the monk Saengui (生義) always stayed at Dojungsa (道中寺).

In a dream a monk led him up Namsan, having him tie grass as markers along the way. When they reached a valley on the south side of the mountain, the monk said, "I am buried in this place. Master, please take me out and place me on top of the ridge."

After he woke, he went with a friend to find the marked places, came to that valley, and dug the ground. A stone Maitreya came out. He placed it on top of Samhwaryeong (三花嶺).

In the twelfth year of Queen Seondeok, the gapjin year, he built a temple and lived there. Later it was named Saenguisa (生義寺).〔Now it is wrongly passed down as Seonguisa. The buddha to which the Master Chungdam brewed tea and made offerings every year on the third day of the third month and the ninth day of the ninth month is this very one.〕
