Samguk Yusa (Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms) Pagodas and Images, Part Four A collection of tales of the Three Kingdoms period, compiled by Iryeon, a monk of Goryeo. He gathered the stories the official histories had cast aside. It is the oldest book that carries the myth of Dangun.

1Indra came down and stayed ten days

In the time of King Gyeongmyeong, the fifty-fourth ruler, the south gate of Heungnyunsa and the corridors on its left and right had burned, and they had not been repaired. Two monks, Jeonghwa (靖和) and Honggye (弘繼), gathered donations meaning to repair them.

In the seventh year of Zhenming (貞明), the sinsa year, on the fifteenth day of the fifth month, Indra (帝釋) came down to the sutra tower (經樓) on the left side of the temple and stayed ten days.

The halls and the pagoda, the grass and trees and earth and stones all gave off a strange fragrance; five-colored clouds covered the temple, and the fish and dragons in the south pond leaped for joy.

The people of the country gathered to watch and marveled that such a thing had never happened before, and jade, silk, and grain piled up like hills. Craftsmen came of their own accord and finished the work in only a few days.

2Indra tells them to paint Samantabhadra in his place

When the work was done and the lord of heaven was about to return, the two monks said to him:

"If you are going back to your palace in heaven, please let us paint your holy form and make offerings to it with utmost sincerity, to repay heaven's grace. And so leave your likeness here, to guard the world below forever."

Indra said:

"The power of my vow is not equal to the way that bodhisattva Samantabhadra spreads his mysterious teaching everywhere. It is right to paint the image of this bodhisattva, make offerings devoutly, and never cease."

The two monks reverently followed his instruction and painted the bodhisattva Samantabhadra on the wall. That image still remains today.
