The Relics in the Stone Pagoda of Baegeomsa
1No one knows the temple's origin
In the third year of Kaiyun (開運), the byeongo year, on the twenty-ninth day of the tenth month, a document of the imdo daegam (任道大監) of the region of Gangju (康州) says this:
"Baegeom Seonsa (伯嚴禪寺) is located in Chopal-hyeon (草八縣),〔Chogye today〕 and the temple monk Ganyu (偘遊), an elder aged thirty-nine, says that when the temple was first founded is not known."
But the old tradition says this.
In the former age, in the time of Silla, the site of the North House (北宅) office was given up and this temple placed there, but in between it lay abandoned for a long time.
In the past byeongin year the Monk Yangbu (陽孚和尙) of Samok valley (沙木谷) rebuilt it and became abbot, and he died in the jeongchuk year.
In the eulyu year the Monk Geungyang (兢讓和尙) of Huiyangsan (曦陽山) came and stayed ten years, and in the eulmi year he went back to Huiyang.
At that time the Monk Sintak (神卓和尙) came from Baegamsu (白嵓藪) in Namwon, entered this temple, and became abbot according to the Dharma.

2Raising a pagoda and setting the temple's rules
Also, in the first year of Xianyong (咸雍), in the eleventh month, the abbot of this temple, the great master Deugomijeong (得奧微定大師), Seoksu (釋秀), established ten articles of standing rules (常規) for the temple.
He newly raised a five-story stone pagoda and enshrined forty-two grains of relics of the Buddha's true body, and set up an endowment (寶) from his private wealth to make offerings every year; this is the first article.
There is an article on setting up an endowment to make offerings before the three seats of the two bright spirits Eomheun and Baekheun, who guard the Dharma and honor the monks of this temple, and Geunak (近岳).〔Popular tradition says that the two men Eomheun (嚴欣) and Baekheun (伯欣) gave up their house to be a temple, so it was named Baegeom, and they then became spirits guarding the Dharma.〕
There are articles such as placing a wooden bowl before the Medicine Buddha in the golden hall and offering rice on the first of every month. What follows is not recorded.
