Yeongchwisa
1Seeing a hawk that would not seize a pheasant, he builds a temple
The old record kept at the temple says this.
In the time of King Sinmun, the twenty-first jingol ruler of Silla, in the second year of Yongchun (永淳), the gyemi year,〔the text saying the first year is wrong〕 the chief minister Lord Chungwon (忠元公) bathed at the hot spring of the state of Jangsan (萇山國)〔this is Dongnae-hyeon, also called the state of Naesan〕 and on his way back to the capital came to Dongji field at Guljeong station, stopped his carriage, and rested.
Suddenly he saw a man release a hawk to chase a pheasant, and the pheasant flew over Geumak and its trace was lost.
Following the sound of the bell, he came to the well north of the Guljeong-hyeon office. The hawk was perched in a tree, and the pheasant was in the well, the water clouded the color of blood.
The pheasant had spread its two wings and was sheltering two chicks, and the hawk too, as if in pity, did not dare to seize it.
The lord saw this and was moved with compassion. He had the ground divined, and it was said that a temple could be built there.
He returned to the capital and reported to the king, had the county moved elsewhere, and built a temple on that site, naming it Yeongchwisa (靈鷲寺).
