The Country of West India西天國
1West India, where they sing well
Then from South India I went north for two months and reached the city where the king of West India lives. This king of West India too has five or six hundred head of elephants. What the land yields is wool cloth and silver, elephants, horses, sheep and cattle. Barley and wheat and every kind of bean come out in plenty, and rice is very scarce. Their food is mostly cakes, barley flour, milk, curds, boiled-down milk and oil. In the market they buy with silver coin and wool cloth and the like.
The king, the chiefs and the people revere and believe the Three Jewels to the utmost. There are many monasteries and many monks, and both the Great Vehicle and the Lesser Vehicle are practised. The land is very wide, and it reaches the western sea in the west. The people of the country sing well, and the other four countries of India are not the equal of this one. Neither are there such things as the cangue, the rod, the prison or execution.
Now it has been invaded by the Arabs (大寔), and half the country is already laid waste.
Again, it is the law of the five Indias that one who sets out on a journey carries no food with him, for wherever he comes he can at once beg and get his food. Only when the king and the chiefs go out do they carry their own food with them and not eat the □□ of the people.
