The Country of Tokhara吐火羅國
1The king driven out by the Arabs
又從此犯引國。北行二十日。至吐火羅國。王住城名為縛底那。見今大𥦽兵馬。在彼鎮押。其王被其王被逼。走向東一月程。在蒲持山。住見屬大𥦽所管。言音與諸國別。共罽賓國少有相似。多分不同。衣著皮毬㲲布等。上至國王。下及黎庶。皆以皮毬。為上服。土地足駝騾羊馬㲲布蒲桃。食唯愛餅。土地寒冷。冬天霜雪也。國王首領及百姓等。甚敬三寶。足寺足僧。行小乘法。食內及葱蕜等。不事外道。男人並剪鬚髮。女人在髮土地足山
Again from this country of Bamiyan I went north for twenty days and reached the country of Tokhara (吐火羅國). The city where the king lives is named Bakjeona (縛底那). The troops of the Arabs are now garrisoned there. That king was pressed hard and fled east a month's journey, and he is on Mount Poji (蒲持山). Now he is under the rule of the Arabs.
Their speech is different from that of the other countries. It is a little like the speech of the country of Gyebin, but for the most part unlike. They wear leather coats, wool cloth and the like. From the king above down to the common people below, all take the leather coat for their outer garment. The land has camels, mules, sheep, horses, wool cloth and grapes in plenty. For food they love only cakes. The land is cold, and in winter there is frost and snow.
The king, the chiefs and the people revere the Three Jewels greatly, and there are many monasteries and many monks, and they practise the Law of the Lesser Vehicle. They eat meat, onions, leeks and the like, and they do not serve the other creeds. The men all cut their beards and hair, and the women let their hair grow. The land has many mountains.
