Again from the country of Tokhara I went west for a month and reached the country of Persia (波斯國). This king ruled the Arabs in former days. The Arabs were the camel-herding folk of the king of Persia, and later they rebelled, killed that king and set themselves up as lords. So now this country has instead been swallowed by the Arabs.

From of old they wear a loose wool shirt, and they cut their beards and hair. Their food is only cakes and meat; even when they have rice, they grind it and make cakes of it to eat.

The land yields camels, mules, sheep and horses, and it yields tall, fine asses, wool cloth and treasures. Their speech is quite their own and is not like that of the other countries.

The nature of the people of that land is to love buying and selling. They are always setting sail on the western sea and entering the southern sea, going to the country of Saja (師子國), that is Sri Lanka, to take all kinds of treasures. That is why it is said that treasures come from that country. They also go to the country of Kunlun (崑崙國) to take gold, and they set sail for the land of Han as well and go straight to Guangzhou (廣州) to take figured silk, plain silk, thread, silk floss and the like. The land yields fine wool cloth of close weave.

The people of the country love to kill living things. They serve Heaven (天) and do not know the Law of the Buddha.
