Wang Ocheonchukguk Jeon (Memoir of the Pilgrimage to the Five Regions of India) Complete in one volume The travel record of Hyecho, a monk of Silla, who at about twenty walked forty countries of India and the Western Regions and set down what he saw. It was lost for more than a thousand years and was found again in 1908 in the caves of Dunhuang, as a damaged scroll. Five poems in five-word lines, longing for home, are carried in it.

1I reach Anxi in the fifteenth year of Kaiyuan

開元十五年十一月上旬。至安西。于時節度大使趙君。

In the first ten days of the eleventh month of the fifteenth year of Kaiyuan (727), I reached Anxi (安西). At that time the grand military commissioner was Lord Zhao (趙君).

2The monasteries of Han at Anxi

且於安西。有兩所漢僧住持。行大乘法。不食肉也。大雲寺主秀行。善能講說。先是。京中七寶臺寺僧大雲寺□維那。名義超善解律藏。舊是京中莊嚴寺僧也大雲寺上座。名明惲。大有行業。亦是京中僧。此等僧。大好住持甚有道心樂崇□德龍興寺主。名法海。雖是漢兒生安西。學識人風。不殊華夏。

At Anxi there are two monasteries with monks of Han as abbots. They practise the Law of the Great Vehicle and do not eat meat.

Xiuxing (秀行), the abbot of Dayun Monastery (大雲寺), preaches well. Before this he was a monk of Qibaotai Monastery (七寶臺寺) in the capital, Chang'an. The □ supervisor of monks (維那) of Dayun Monastery is named Yichao (義超), and he explains the Vinaya (律藏) well. He was originally a monk of Zhuangyan Monastery (莊嚴寺) in the capital. The elder of Dayun Monastery is named Mingyun (明惲), and his practice is great. He too is a monk of the capital. These monks look after their monasteries very well. Their hearts are deep in the Way, and they gladly exalt □ virtue.

The abbot of Longxing Monastery (龍興寺) is named Fahai (法海). Though he was born in Anxi, he is a man of Han, and in learning and in bearing he is no different from China (華夏).

3The monasteries of Han at Khotan and Kashgar

于闐有一漢寺。名龍興寺。有一漢僧。名□□。是彼寺主。大好住持。彼僧是河北冀州人士疎勒亦有漢大雲寺。有一漢僧住持。即是崏州人士

At Khotan too there is one monastery of Han, named Longxing Monastery. There is one monk of Han there, named □□, and he is the abbot of that monastery. He looks after his monastery very well. That monk is a man of Jizhou (冀州) in Hebei.

At Kashgar too there is a Dayun Monastery of Han, and one monk of Han is abbot there. He is a man of Minzhou (崏州).
