Ye濊
1Ye — those of the same surname do not marry
Ye borders Jinhan on the south and Goguryeo and Okjeo on the north, and on the east it ends at the great sea. All that lies east of Joseon today is its land. Its households are twenty thousand.
Long ago Gija went to Joseon and made a teaching in eight articles and taught it, and though the doors were not barred the people did not steal. More than forty generations after that, the Marquis of Joseon presumed to call himself king.
When Chen Sheng and the others rose and the empire turned against Qin, the people of Yan and Qi and Zhao who took refuge in Joseon were tens of thousands. Wiman, a man of Yan, bound his hair in a topknot and put on barbarian dress, and he came in his turn and held kingship there. Emperor Wu of Han struck Joseon and destroyed it, and divided the land into four commanderies. After this the Hu (胡) and the Han (漢) were parted little by little.
There is no great king. From the time of Han their offices have been marquis (侯) and eupgun (邑君) and samno (三老), and these lead and hold the haho. Their old men have said of themselves from of old that they are of the same stock as Goguryeo.
The people are careful and true in nature. They have few pleasures and few wants, and they know shame and do not beg from others. Their speech and law and custom are much the same as those of Goguryeo, but their clothing differs. The clothes of both men and women have a curved collar (曲領), and a man hangs a silver flower several inches wide on it for ornament.
West of the great mountain ridge of Dandan belongs to Nangnang, and east of that ridge the seven counties were held by the Commandant, and all of them had the Ye for their people. Later the Commandant was done away with and their chieftains were enfeoffed as marquises, and the Bullae Ye of today are all of that stock. At the end of Han they belonged to Goguryeo again.
By their custom they hold the mountains and the rivers to be weighty. Every mountain and river has its own portion set apart, and they may not cross into one another's ground at will. Those of the same surname do not marry. They have many things they shun. When someone falls sick and dies, each time they pull down the old house and build a new one. They have hemp cloth, and they raise silkworms and make silk. They know how to watch the stars, and they know beforehand whether the year will be full or lean.
2Mucheon and chaekhwa
They do not hold pearls and jade to be treasures. Always in the tenth month they sacrifice to Heaven, and by night and by day they drink wine and sing and dance, and it is called Mucheon (舞天). They also sacrifice to the tiger and hold it for a god.
When their settlements trespass on one another, each time they punish one another and exact people and oxen and horses, and this is called chaekhwa (責禍). Whoever kills a man pays for it with his death. There is little theft.
They make spears thirty feet long, and sometimes several men hold one together, and they are good at fighting on foot. The Nangnang birch bow (樂浪檀弓) comes from that land. From their sea comes the skin of the spotted fish (班魚), and in the land there are many patterned leopards, and the gwahama (果下馬) also comes from there, and it was offered as tribute in the time of Emperor Huan of Han.
Interlinear notes 1
Your servant Songzhi notes: the gwahama is three feet high, so that a man can ride it and pass under a fruit tree, and therefore it is called gwaha (果下), which is to say "under the fruit." This is seen in the Bowu zhi and the Wei du fu.
3The King of Bullae Ye
In the sixth year of Zhengshi, Liu Mao, Grand Administrator of Nangnang, and Gong Zun, Grand Administrator of Daebang, said that the Ye east of the ridge had gone over to Goguryeo, and they raised troops and struck them, and the Marquis of Bullae and the others gave up their towns and surrendered. In the eighth year they came to the palace gate and brought tribute, and by edict the Marquis of Bullae was made King of Bullae Ye (不耐濊王) once more.
Their dwellings are mixed in among the people, and in the four seasons they came to the commandery to present themselves. When the two commanderies had a levy of troops or a gathering of taxes, they supplied it and were put to work, and they were treated just as the people were.
