The Country of Nuchijian笯赤建國
Da Tang Xiyu Ji (Great Tang Records on the Western Regions) Book 1 The record Xuanzang laid before Emperor Taizong of the Tang after seventeen years of walking through the Western Regions and India, a hundred and thirty-eight countries in all. It is the stuff from which Journey to the West was made, but what stands here is not monsters — it is the compass and the climate and the speech and the faith of one country after another. The road runs two hundred years after Faxian and eighty years before Hyecho.
笯赤建國。周千餘里。地沃壤備稼穡。草木欝茂華果繁盛。多蒲萄亦所貴也。城邑百數各別君長。進止往來不相稟命。雖則畫野區分總稱笯赤建國。
The country of Nuchijian is more than a thousand li around. The soil is rich and fully given to sowing and reaping. Grass and trees grow thick, and flowers and fruit are plentiful. Grapes are many, and they are prized as well. The walled towns are counted in the hundreds, and each has its own ruler and chief, and in their comings and goings they take no orders from one another. Though the fields are marked off and divided, taken together they are called the country of Nuchijian.
從此西行二百餘里至赭時國。
Going west from here more than two hundred li, one reaches the country of Zheshi.
