Da Tang Xiyu Ji (Great Tang Records on the Western Regions) Book 1 The record Xuanzang laid before Emperor Taizong of the Tang after seventeen years of walking through the Western Regions and India, a hundred and thirty-eight countries in all. It is the stuff from which Journey to the West was made, but what stands here is not monsters — it is the compass and the climate and the speech and the faith of one country after another. The road runs two hundred years after Faxian and eighty years before Hyecho.

赭時國。周千餘里。西臨葉河。東西狹南北長。土宜氣序同笯赤建國。城邑數十各別君長。既無總主役屬突厥。

The country of Zheshi is more than a thousand li around. On the west it comes down to the Ye river. It is narrow from east to west and long from north to south. What the soil suits and the seasons are the same as in the country of Nuchijian. There are some tens of walled towns, and each has its own ruler and chief. Since there is no lord over the whole, they are held in service by the Turks.

從此東南千餘里至𢘥捍國。

Going southeast from here more than a thousand li, one reaches the country of Feihan.
