Da Tang Xiyu Ji (Great Tang Records on the Western Regions) Book 1 The record Xuanzang laid before Emperor Taizong of the Tang after seventeen years of walking through the Western Regions and India, a hundred and thirty-eight countries in all. It is the stuff from which Journey to the West was made, but what stands here is not monsters — it is the compass and the climate and the speech and the faith of one country after another. The road runs two hundred years after Faxian and eighty years before Hyecho.
The country of Feihan is more than four thousand li around. Mountains ring it on its four borders. The soil is rich, and what is sown and reaped grows well and full. Flowers and fruit are many, and the land suits sheep and horses. The seasons bring a cold wind, and the people are hard and brave by nature. Their speech is unlike that of the countries around, and they are coarse and worn in looks. For some tens of years there has been no great ruler; the chiefs contend in strength and will not submit to one another. They lean on the streams and hold the steep places, and they have marked off the fields and divided the seats of rule.
從此西行千餘里至窣堵利瑟那國。
Going west from here more than a thousand li, one reaches the country of Sudulisena.
