The Country of Boluluo
The country of Boluluo is more than four thousand li around. It lies among the Great Snow Mountains, long from east to west and narrow from north to south. Barley and beans are many, and gold and silver come from it, and on the profit of its gold the living of the country is rich and ample. The season is only bitterly cold, and the nature of the people is rough and fierce. They are thin in kindness and right dealing, and they have never heard of courtesy. Their looks are coarse and mean, and their clothes are wool and coarse hemp. Their letters are much the same as in India, but their speech differs from that of the other countries. There are several hundred monasteries and several thousand monks, but in their learning there is nothing they study to the end, and their keeping of the precepts is much disordered.
From here one returns again to the city of Wuduojiahantu and crosses the river Xindu to the south. The river is three or four li wide and flows to the southwest. It is clear and bright as a mirror, and it runs swiftly by. Poisonous dragons and fierce beasts make their dens within it. If a man crosses carrying precious jewels, or rare flowers and fruit seeds, or relics of the Buddha, the boat is often overturned and sunk. Crossing the river, one comes to the country of Dachashiluo.
