The Country of Quluduo
The country of Quluduo is more than three thousand li around, and mountains ring its four borders. The great capital city of the country is fourteen or fifteen li around. The soil is rich, grain is sown in its season, flowers and fruits grow full and rich, and grass and trees thrive and grow thick. Since it lies next to the Snow Mountains, precious herbs are many, and it yields gold, silver, red copper, fire pearls and rain stones. The climate is colder still, but little frost and snow fall. The look of the people is coarse and worn, and they have goiters and swollen legs. Their nature is hard and fierce, and they honor spirit and courage. There are more than twenty monasteries and more than a thousand monks. Most study the Greater Vehicle, and few learn the several schools. There are fifteen temples of the gods, and followers of other ways live mixed among them. Leaning on the cliffs and holding the ridges, stone chambers stand one next to another. Some are where arhats dwell, and some are where immortals stay. In the country there is a stupa, raised by King Wuyou. Long ago the Tathagata came to this country and spoke the Law and saved men, and the trace he left is what this records.
