The Country of Shelandaluo
The country of Shelandaluo is more than a thousand li from east to west and more than eight hundred li from north to south. The great capital city of the country is twelve or thirteen li around. The land is fit for grain, and the plain rice is plentiful. The trees of the forest spread thick, and flowers and fruits grow full and rich. The climate is warm and hot, and the customs are hard and fierce. The faces of the people are low and mean, but every household is rich. There are more than fifty monasteries and more than two thousand monks, and they study the Greater Vehicle and the Lesser Vehicle, each in its own school. There are three temples of the gods and more than five hundred followers of other ways, and all belong to the company that smears itself with ashes. A former king of this country honored and revered the ways of others. Afterward he met an arhat, and he heard the Law and believed and awoke. Therefore the king of Central India took his pure faith for a model and gave into his sole charge the affairs of the Three Jewels in the five countries of India. He mingled this side and that and forgot love and hate. He watched over the monks and searched out with fine skill what was pure and what was foul. So those whose way and virtue were widely known he revered and looked up to with all his heart, and those who marred and broke the precepts he reproached and punished deeply. Wherever there was a holy trace he set up a marker, here a stupa and there a monastery, and within the borders of India there was no place he did not reach.
From here one goes northeast, crosses steep ridges, passes through cave-like valleys, goes by perilous ways and treads dangerous roads, and after more than seven hundred li one comes to the country of Quluduo.
