Da Tang Xiyu Ji (Great Tang Records on the Western Regions) Book 4 The record Xuanzang laid before Emperor Taizong of the Tang after seventeen years of walking through the Western Regions and India, a hundred and thirty-eight countries in all. It is the stuff from which Journey to the West was made, but what stands here is not monsters — it is the compass and the climate and the speech and the faith of one country after another. The road runs two hundred years after Faxian and eighty years before Hyecho.

The country of Piluoshanna is more than two thousand li around, and the great capital of the country is more than ten li around. The climate and what the soil suits are the same as in the country of Exichedaluo. The customs are fierce and rough, and the people know how to study and learn. They greatly believe in the ways of others and pay little reverence to the Law of the Buddha. There are two monasteries and three hundred monks, and all of them study the Law and teaching of the Greater Vehicle. There are five temples of the gods, and followers of other ways live mixed among them.

2The place where he spoke the Yunjiewai jing

大城中故伽藍內,有窣堵波,基雖傾圮,尚百餘尺,無憂王之所建也,如來在昔於此七日說《蘊界外經》之所。其側則有過去四佛座及經行遺跡斯在。

Within an old monastery in the great city there is a stupa. Its foundation leans and has fallen, but it is still more than a hundred feet high. It was raised by King Wuyou, and it is the place where the Tathagata long ago spoke the Yunjiewai jing here for seven days. Beside it are the traces where the four Buddhas of the past sat and walked.

從此東南行二百餘里,至劫比他國。

From here one goes southeast more than two hundred li and comes to the country of Jiebita.
