Da Tang Xiyu Ji (Great Tang Records on the Western Regions) Book 10 The record Xuanzang laid before Emperor Taizong of the Tang after seventeen years of walking through the Western Regions and India, a hundred and thirty-eight countries in all. It is the stuff from which Journey to the West was made, but what stands here is not monsters — it is the compass and the climate and the speech and the faith of one country after another. The road runs two hundred years after Faxian and eighty years before Hyecho.

The country of Zhanpo is more than four thousand li around. The great capital city of the country turns its back on the Qingqie river to the north, and it is more than forty li around. The soil is low and damp, and planting and reaping grow well and thrive. The climate is warm and hot, and the customs are simple and plain. There are several tens of monasteries, and many of them have leaned over and fallen. The monks are more than two hundred, and they study the teaching of the Lesser Vehicle. There are more than twenty temples of the gods, and followers of other ways live mixed among them.

2The first capital raised in the continent of Shanbu

The capital city is built up of brick and is several fathoms high. Its foundation is lofty and steep, and it stands high and hard for an enemy to take. Long ago at the beginning of the kalpa, when men and things were first beginning, they lived in the open and dwelt in caves and did not yet know houses. Later there was a heavenly woman who let down her traces among men. She wandered by the Qingqie river and washed herself in the stream and made herself fair, and she was moved by a spirit and conceived, and she bore four sons. They divided the continent of Shanbu, and each held a region of his own. They raised capitals and built towns, and they marked out their bounds and drew their borders. This place is the capital of the country of one of those sons, and it is the first of all the cities of the continent of Shanbu.

3The lone island ringed with water

A hundred and forty or fifty li east of the city, south of the Qingqie river, there is a lone island ringed with water, and its cliffs and peaks are lofty and steep. On it there is a temple of the gods, and the spirit there answers with many wonders. They have cut into the cliff to make chambers and drawn the stream in to make a pool. Flowering groves and rare trees, great rocks and perilous peaks are there, a dwelling for the kind and the wise, and those who look on it forget to go home.

4Wild elephants and fierce beasts

In the mountains and forests on the southern border of the country, wild elephants and fierce beasts wander in herds that are counted by the thousand.

From here one goes east more than four hundred li and comes to the country of Jiezhuwaqiluo.
