The Country of Afentu
The country of Afentu is two thousand four or five hundred li around. The great capital city of the country is more than twenty li around. There is no great ruler, and the country is subject to the country of Xindu. The soil suits planting and harvest, and winter wheat is especially plentiful. Flowers and fruits are few, and grass and trees are sparse. The seasons are windy and cold, and the nature of the people is rough and harsh. Their words are plain and blunt, and they do not prize the work of study, yet toward the Three Jewels they keep their hearts in simple faith. There are more than twenty monasteries and more than two thousand monks, and they mostly study the Law of the Zhengliang school of the Lesser Vehicle. There are five temples of the gods, and all of them are places of the followers of other ways who smear themselves with ashes.
2The place where he let the monks wear shoes and padded robes
Not far northeast of the city, in the midst of a great bamboo grove, there are the remaining traces of a monastery, and this is the place where the Tathagata long ago let the monks wear jifuxi. Beside it is a stupa built by King Wuyou, and though its base has tilted and sunk, it is still more than a hundred feet high. In the chapel beside it there is a standing image of the Buddha made of blue stone, and on every fast day it sometimes sends out a holy light. More than eight hundred paces south of that, in the forest, there is a stupa built by King Wuyou. Long ago the Tathagata stayed here, and the night being cold he covered himself with his three robes one upon another; and when the next morning came he let the monks wear robes lined and padded. In this forest there is the place where the Buddha walked, and there are other stupas that lie in rows like fish scales and look upon one another, and all of them are places where the four Buddhas of the past sat. Within those stupas are the hair and the nails of the Tathagata, and on every fast day they often send out a bright light.
