The Country of Falana
The country of Falana is more than four thousand li around. The great capital city of the country is more than twenty li around. The people who live there are many and thriving, and the country is subject to the country of Jiabishi. The land has many mountains and forests, and planting and harvest are done in their season. The seasons are a little cold, and the customs are rough and harsh. Their nature is quick and fierce, and their aims are low and worn. Their speech is a little like that of Central India. They honor the false and the true together, and they are not fond of learning and the arts. There are several tens of monasteries, and many of them are already waste and fallen. There are more than three hundred monks, and all of them study the Law and teaching of the Greater Vehicle. There are five temples of the gods, and they mostly belong to the followers of other ways who smear themselves with ashes.
2The old monastery where the Tathagata spoke the Law
Not far south of the city there is an old monastery. Long ago the Tathagata spoke the Law here. He taught and showed, he gave profit and gave joy, and he opened and awakened all that have life. Beside it is the place where the four Buddhas of the past sat and walked, and their traces remain.
3The fine horses of the country of Jijiangna
The people of that land say that from this country westward it touches the country of Jijiangna, that they live among the great mountains, that each river valley sets up its own master, and that there is no great ruler. Sheep and horses are many, and there are fine horses whose bodies are unusually large, a breed rare in the other countries and held as a treasure in the lands about them.
Again from here to the northwest, crossing great mountains and wading wide rivers and passing small cities and towns, going more than two thousand li, one leaves the land of India and reaches the country of Caojuzha.
