Da Tang Xiyu Ji (Great Tang Records on the Western Regions) Book 12 The record Xuanzang laid before Emperor Taizong of the Tang after seventeen years of walking through the Western Regions and India, a hundred and thirty-eight countries in all. It is the stuff from which Journey to the West was made, but what stands here is not monsters — it is the compass and the climate and the speech and the faith of one country after another. The road runs two hundred years after Faxian and eighty years before Hyecho.
The country of Boduochuangna is the old land of the country of Duhuoluo, and it is more than two thousand li around. The great capital city of the country sits on a cliff of the mountain and is six or seven li around. Its mountains and rivers run on and on, and sand and stone lie spread far and wide. The land suits beans and wheat, and there are many grapes and walnuts and pears and crab apples and other fruits. The climate is cold and harsh, and the nature of the people is hard and fierce. In their customs there is no rite and no law, and they know nothing of learning or of the arts. Their looks are low and coarse, and they mostly wear felt and coarse cloth. There are three or four monasteries, and the monks are few. The king is simple and plain in nature, and he believes deeply in the Three Jewels.
從此東南,山谷中行二百餘里,至淫薄健國。
From here one goes southeast through the mountain valleys, and after more than two hundred li one comes to the country of Yinbojian.
