The Country of Zhuojujia
The country of Zhuojujia is more than a thousand li around. The great capital city of the country is more than ten li around, and it is firm and steep and hard to take, and the households on its registers are many and thriving. Its mountains and hills lie joined one to another, and gravel and stone spread wide over it. Two rivers lie over it like a belt, and there is a good deal of plowing and planting, and grapes and pears and crab apples, its fruits, are truly plentiful. At times the wind is cold, and the people are hasty and violent. Their customs are nothing but guile and deceit, and they rob and steal openly. Their writing is the same as that of the country of Qusadanna, and their speech differs. Their rites and right dealing are light and thin, and their learning and arts are shallow and near at hand. They believe in the Three Jewels with a simple heart, and they take pleasure in blessing and benefit. There are some tens of monasteries, and many of them have already fallen into ruin. The monks are more than a hundred, and they study the teaching of the Greater Vehicle.
2The great mountain on the south of the country — where the sutras of the Greater Vehicle are most abundant
On the southern border of the country there is a great mountain. Its cliffs and ridges are lofty, and its peaks and hills lie fold upon fold. Its grasses and trees stand up against the cold, and spring and autumn are one and the same there. Its streams and torrents run deep and swift, and the flying waters pour down on every side. Niches in the cliffs and chambers of stone are set like pieces on a board through the rocks and woods. Men of India who have gained the fruit often work their spiritual powers and rise lightly and travel far, and they come to rest and stay here. Many arhats have passed into stillness here, and so there are many stupas. Even now there are three arhats living in caves in the rock who have entered the concentration of the cessation of mind. Their form is like that of thin men, and their beards and hair keep growing, and so the monks go from time to time to shave them. And in this country the works of the sutras of the Greater Vehicle are especially many, and of all the places the Law of the Buddha has reached none is so abundant as this. Works of a hundred thousand verses are some ten in number, and below these the stream of them is truly wide.
From here one goes east, crossing ridges and passing over valleys, and after more than eight hundred li comes to the country of Qusadanna.
Interlinear notes 1
In the language of the Tang it is the milk of the earth, and this is the refined speech of that place. In the common speech it is called the country of Hanna, and the Xiongnu call it Yudun, and the various foreign peoples call it Huodan, and India calls it Qudan. In old days it was called Yutian, which is a mistake.
