When the Yuan Wei had their seat at Sanggan, Hua was still a small kingdom and belonged to the Ruirui. Afterward it grew strong and great little by little, and it attacked the kingdoms round about, Bosi, that is, Persia, and Panpan, Jibin, Yanqi, Qiuci, Shule, Gumo, Yutian and Jupan, and opened up more than a thousand li of land. The soil is warm, there are many hills and streams and trees, and the five grains grow there. The people of that kingdom take game caught in nets and the flesh of sheep for their food. Among their beasts there are lions, two-humped camels, and wild asses with horns. The people are all good with the bow. They wear a robe long in the body with small sleeves, and they make their belts of gold and jade. The women wear furs, and on the head they carve wood into a horn six feet long and adorn it with gold and silver. Women are few, and brothers share one wife. They have no city walls and live in felt tents, and they open the door to the east. Their king sits on a golden couch and turns it with the year star (太歲), and he sits beside his wife to receive guests. They have no writing, and they cut notches in wood for a pledge. When they deal with the kingdoms round about, they have a Hu of those kingdoms write a Hu letter (胡書) for them, and sheepskin is their paper. They have no offices. They serve the god of heaven and the god of fire, and every day they go out of the door and sacrifice to the gods before they eat. In kneeling they bow once and no more. For burial they make an outer coffin of wood. When a parent dies the son cuts off one ear, and when the burial is done he puts off mourning at once. Their speech passes only when men of Henan stand between and interpret.
