Liang Shu Zhuyi Zhuan (Accounts of the Various Foreign Peoples in the Book of Liang) Complete in one volume Thirty-six kingdoms as the Liang of the Southern dynasties saw them. The memorial in which King Muryeong of Baekje announced that his land had become a strong kingdom once more; the record in which Silla first appears under its own name; the tale of the Buddha's hair and the stupa of King Ashoka; and the legends from the far end of the sea, of Fusang and the Kingdom of Women — from the Southern Sea to the Western Regions, this is the broadest of all the accounts of the various foreign peoples.

1The kingdom of Ruirui

The kingdom of Ruirui, that is, the Rouran, is a separate branch of the Xiongnu. In the age of Wei and Jin the Xiongnu were divided into hundreds and thousands of tribes, and each had its own name, and Ruirui was one of those tribes. After the Yuan Wei moved south, Ruirui took their old land for itself. They have no walled towns. They follow the water and the grass and pasture their herds, and they make their homes of round felt tents. They braid their hair and wear brocade, robes with small sleeves, trousers narrow at the ankle, and boots deep in the top. Their land is bitterly cold, and even in the seventh month drifting ice stretches across the rivers. In the Shengming years of Song, Wang Honggui was sent there as envoy to draw them in and strike Wei together. In the first year of Jianyuan of Qi, when Honggui first came to that kingdom, the king of the kingdom led three hundred thousand horsemen and went out more than three thousand li southeast of Mount Yanran, and the men of Wei shut their passes and did not dare to fight. Afterward Ruirui grew weak little by little. In the Yongming years it was broken by the Dingling, became a small kingdom again, and moved its dwellings to the south. In the Tianjian years it broke the Dingling at last and won back its old land. It built walled towns for the first time, and the name of the town was Mumo. In the fourteenth year it sent an envoy to offer a robe of black sable, and in the first year of Putong it sent an envoy again to offer the products of its country, and after this it came once in several years. In the seventh year of Datong it offered one horse and one catty of gold as well.

2The art of calling up wind and snow

其國能以術祭天而致風雪,前對皎日,後則泥潦橫流,故其戰敗莫能追及。或於中夏爲之,則曀而不雨,問其故,以㬉云。

That kingdom can sacrifice to heaven by an art of theirs and bring on wind and snow, so that before them is a clear sun while behind them muddy water runs across the ground, and for this reason no one can overtake them even when they lose a battle. When the art is worked in China (中夏), it only grows overcast and no rain comes, and when they are asked the reason they say it is because the land is warm.
