Jewang Ungi (Rhymed Chronicle of Emperors and Kings) Lower Book From Pangu to the Jurchen Jin, from Dangun to Goryeo — an epic that weaves the two histories, of China and of the East, into verse. Declaring that there is a world apart in Liaodong, it sets the history of Korea beside that of China, and it is one of the first histories to sing of Dangun as the founding ancestor of every state on the Korean peninsula. The author's own one hundred and ninety-seven interlinear notes are carried with it.

1From marshal to Taejo

太祖 除元帥, 不戰服諸方, 功業昌而熾.

Taejo was appointed marshal, and without fighting he brought the several regions to submit, and his work and his merit flourished and blazed.

5Three thousand troops gather

不期而會者, 三千步與騎, 若旱之望雲, 四方爭傒喜.

Those who gathered without appointment were three thousand foot and horse, and as a drought looks up for clouds, the four quarters vied in gladness and waited.

6The Samhan share one wheel-track

徂征十八年, 三韓同一軌.

After eighteen years of going out to punish, the Samhan shared a single wheel-track.

8Hyejong, Jeongjong and Gwangjong

His taboo name was So (昭). His first year, giyu, was the second year of Qianyou under Emperor Yin of Han and the third year of Tianlu under Shizong of Liao. The examinations began then, and Wang Yung was commanded to choose seven men, Choe Geoeop among them. The ministers enshrined with him were Yu Sinseong and Seo Pil.

9The years of their rule

或三或五年, 或三九臨莅.

One three years, one five years, and one was on the throne for twenty-seven.

10Gyeongjong, seven years

景是光之子, 七載作天吏.

Gyeongjong was the son of Gwangjong, and for seven years he was an officer of heaven.

11Seongjong, seventeen years

有繼得追封, 祖子戴安是, 戴子曰成宗, 臨軒十七祀.

There were those who followed after and were invested in death, Daejong and Anjong, the sons of Taejo. The son of Daejong was Seongjong, and he sat in the hall of state for seventeen years.

12Mokjong and Kim Chiyang

Mokjong, the son of Gyeongjong, had thirteen years, and Kim Chiyang was lewd and wanton.

Gang Jo came from Seogyeong, and Hyeonjong, the son of Anjong, arose.

14The restoration of Hyeonjong

中興二十三, 後有王聖嗣.

His restoration lasted twenty-three years, and after him holy heirs followed.

18Sunjong and Seonjong

22Yejong and the remarkable scholars

肅子睿十八, 朝野多奇士.

Yejong, the son of Sukjong, had eighteen years, and at court and in retirement there were many remarkable scholars.

Injong, the son of Yejong, had five times five, twenty-five years, and he was pressed hard by Yi Jagyeom.

24Uijong, Myeongjong and Sinjong

Uijong and Myeongjong and Sinjong, the sons of Injong, came to the throne in order, like the scales of a fish.

25The disaster of Jeong Jungbu

毅享二十五, 鄭忠輔禍始, 衣冠委灰塵, 至今說庚癸.

When Uijong had enjoyed twenty-five years, the disaster of Jeong Jungbu began, and the capped and robed, the civil officials, were thrown to ash and dust, and to this day men tell of the years gyeongin and gyesa.

26Gyeong Daeseung and Yi Uimin

慶大升誅凶, 李義門逃避, 悲夫我命短, 致爾復來肆.

When Gyeong Daeseung cut down the cruel man, Yi Uimin fled and hid himself, and alas, he cried, "My span of life is short," and that death let the other come back and run wild again.

27Myeongjong, twenty-eight years

明二十八年, 見遜罪在爾, 爾惡豈一時.

In the twenty-eighth year of Myeongjong he was put off the throne, and the fault lay with you. How was your evil the work of one time only?

His taboo name was Ho (晧). His first year, gyeongin, was the tenth year of Dading under Shizong of Jin. In his fourth year, gyesa, Bodang, the second son of the chief minister Kim Yeongbu, went out as inspector of the Gyeongsangju circuit, while his elder brother Jidang was within. They answered one another and plotted to restore the rightful king, and they were killed for it, and so there was great disorder again. Yi Uimin was sent to the place of banishment to kill Uijong, and Mun Gongyu, that is Mun Geukgyeom, was ordered to make a new table of court ranks (排班圖), so that in every office within and without the civil and the military were mixed together. After that the general Gyeong Daeseung raised up righteousness and cut down Jungbu, and Yi Uimin fled to Gyeongju. When Daeseung died he came back and held power again. The ministers enshrined with him were Gi Yun and Mun Geukgyeom. ○ Choe Hongyun, the prime minister, wrote on the shrine of Gyeong Daeseung, "His spirit covered the age and his strength pulled up mountains, and his work of settling the house of Liu was done in a sudden space. What has left the regret of the Samhan to this day is that he put the tiger in the net and let it go free as it pleased." His words are true indeed.

28Sinjong and Huijong

權臣起何自, 神御八星宿, 其子熙亦爾.

Whence did the rise of the powerful ministers come? Sinjong ruled the turning of eight star lodges, eight years, and his son Huijong was the same.

29The eldest son of Myeongjong

After Huijong came the eldest son of Myeongjong (Gangjong), and son after son enjoyed the will of heaven.

30Gangjong and Gojong

康三 後高宗, 四十七年理.

After the three years of Gangjong came Gojong, who ruled for forty-seven years.
