The trials in Nenokatasukuni
1He passes Susanoo's trials and escapes
He went as he had been told to the place of Susanoo no Mikoto, and the god's daughter Suseribime (須勢理毗賣) came out and saw him. Their eyes met and they married. She went back in and said to her father, "A very fair god has come."
The great god came out and looked, and said, "This one is called Ashiharashikoo." At once he called him in and had him sleep in the chamber of snakes.
Then his wife Suseribime no Mikoto gave her husband a snake scarf and said, "When the snakes try to bite you, wave this scarf three times and drive them off." He did as she taught him, and the snakes grew quiet of themselves, so he slept in peace and came out.
On the next night he was put into the chamber of centipedes and bees, and again she gave him a scarf for centipedes and bees and taught him as before. So he came out unharmed.
Again the god shot a humming arrow into the middle of a broad field and made him fetch that arrow. When he went into the field, the god set fire around it and burned the field. While he did not know where to get out, a mouse came and said, "Inside it is 'horahora' — hollow. Outside it is 'subusubu' — narrow."
Because it said this, he trod on that spot, and while he dropped down and lay hidden, the fire passed over. The mouse brought that humming arrow in its mouth and offered it to him. The feathers of the arrow had all been eaten by the mouse's young.
His wife Suseribime came weeping with the things for a funeral, and her father the great god, thinking him dead already, came out and stood in that field. When he brought the arrow and offered it, the god took him into the house, called him into a great hall of eight bays, and made him pick the lice from his head.
When he looked at that head, there were many centipedes in it. Then his wife gave her husband the fruit of a muku tree and red clay. He bit the fruit to pieces, held the red clay in his mouth and spat it out, and the great god, thinking that he was biting the centipedes to pieces and spitting them out, was fond of him in his heart and fell asleep.
Then he took hold of the great god's hair, tied it fast to each rafter of the chamber, blocked the door of the chamber with a rock that five hundred men would draw, took his wife Suseribime on his back, took the great god's Ikutachi (生大刀) and Ikuyumiya (生弓矢) and the Ame no Norigoto (天詔琴), and fled. Just then that Ame no Norigoto brushed against a tree, and the earth rang.
The great god, who had been sleeping, heard it and started up, and pulled the chamber down. But while he was untying the hair bound to the rafters, the other had fled far away.
So he followed as far as the Yomotsuhirasaka, and looking far off he called to Ohoanamuji no Kami and said, "With that Ikutachi and that Ikuyumiya of yours, drive your brothers down to the ridges of the passes and drive them away to the shoals of the rivers, and you — 'ore' — become Ohokuninushi no Kami and become Utsushikuninushi no Kami. And make my daughter Suseribime your first wife, and at the foot of Mount Uka (宇迦能山) set the pillars of your palace on the bedrock below — 'futoshiri' — and raise the roof beams high to Takamanohara — 'takashiri' — and live there. You rogue!"
So with that great sword and bow he drove out the eighty gods. At every ridge of a pass he drove them down, and at every shoal of a river he drove them away, and thus he first made the land.
As for Yagamihime, he married her as had been promised before — "mitoatawashitsu." But though he brought Yagamihime with him, she feared his first wife Suseribime, and so she put the child she had borne in the fork of a tree and went back. Therefore that child is called Kimata no Kami (木俣神), and another name is Mii no Kami (御井神).
When this Yachihoko no Kami went to woo Nunakawahime (沼河比賣) of the land of Koshi (高志國), he came to the house of Nunakawahime and sang:
