The song sung to Nunakawahime

Kojiki (Record of Ancient Matters) 古事記 · Ō no Yasumaro · 712 (Japan, 5th year of Wadō) · 4 passages · 469 Chinese characters · reading time 1.9 min

Kojiki (Record of Ancient Matters) Upper Book The oldest surviving book in Japan. Three volumes, beginning with the opening of heaven and earth, passing through the age of the gods, and closing with Empress Suiko. One hundred and five songs are written in man'yōgana, so a whole text survives in which the Chinese characters carry sound alone and not meaning. It sets down the same events differently from the Nihon Shoki at many points, and is well worth reading beside it.

— The god Yachihoko, in the land of the eight islands could not win a wife, and in the far, far land of Koshi he heard there was a wise woman, he heard there was a fair woman, and again and again he went and stood there to woo her, again and again he journeyed there to wed her. My sword cord is not yet loosed, my cloak is not yet taken off, and at the plank door where the maiden sleeps I push and shake it as I stand, I pull and pull at it as I stand, and on the green mountain the thrush cries, the pheasant of the fields cries loud, the cock of the yard beats its wings and crows. Hateful are the birds that cry. Make these birds leave off their crying. O messenger, O runner across the heavens. This is the tale that has been handed down.

2She answers from inside the door

Then Nunakawahime, who had not yet opened the door, sang from within.

3Nunakawahime's answering song

— O god Yachihoko. I am a woman like withered grass, and my heart is a bird of the water's edge. Now I am still my own bird, but later I shall be your bird, so do not take my life away. O messenger, O runner across the heavens. This is the tale that has been handed down.

When the sun hides behind the green mountain, I shall come out in the pitch-black night. I shall come smiling like the morning sun, and with arms white as paper mulberry, with a breast soft as spring snow, you will stroke me and stroke me, and with my fair arm for your pillow stretch out your legs and sleep at ease. So do not long for me so bitterly. O god Yachihoko. This is the tale that has been handed down.

4They are wed on the next night

So on that night they were not wed, and on the next night they were wed.
