Kojiki (Record of Ancient Matters) Middle and Lower Books The oldest surviving book in Japan. Three volumes, beginning with the opening of heaven and earth, passing through the age of the gods, and closing with Empress Suiko. One hundred and five songs are written in man'yōgana, so a whole text survives in which the Chinese characters carry sound alone and not meaning. It sets down the same events differently from the Nihon Shoki at many points, and is well worth reading beside it.

1Emperor Hanzei

水齒別命。坐多治比之柴垣宮。治天下也。此天皇。御身之長。九尺二寸半。御齒長一寸廣二分。上下等齊。既如貫珠。天皇。娶丸邇之許碁登臣之女。都怒郎女。生御子。甲斐郎女。次都夫良郎女。又娶同臣之女。弟比賣。生御子。財王。次多訶辨郎女。并四王也。天皇之御年。陸拾歲。御陵在毛受野也。

Mizuhawake no Mikoto dwelt in the palace of Shibagaki in Tajihi (多治比之柴垣宮), and ruled all under heaven.

This Emperor was nine feet two and a half inches tall. His teeth were an inch long and two tenths of an inch wide, and upper and lower were so even that they were like beads strung on a thread.

The Emperor took to wife Tsuno no Iratsume (都怒郎女), the daughter of Kogoto no Omi (許碁登臣) of Wani, and the children born were Kahi no Iratsume (甲斐郎女), and next Tsubura no Iratsume (都夫良郎女).

He also took to wife Otohime (弟比賣), the daughter of the same retainer, and the children born were Takara no Miko (財王), and next Takabe no Iratsume (多訶辨郎女). In all there were four children.

This Emperor was sixty years old. His tomb is on the plain of Mozu (毛受野).
