Samguk Sagi (History of the Three Kingdoms) Annals of Silla The oldest surviving history of Korea. It is made up of the annals of Silla, Goguryeo and Baekje, together with the treatises, the tables and the biographies. Kim Busik set his own judgments here and there in passages marked as his comment, so what the compiler doubted and what he rebuked stands there still.

1Naehae Isageum ascends the throne

奈解尼師今立,伐休王之孫也。母,内禮夫人。妃,昔氏,助賁王之妹。容儀雄偉,有俊才。前王太子骨正及第二十子伊買先死,大孫尚幼少,乃立伊買之子。是爲奈解尼師今。是年,自正月至四月,不雨。及王即位之日,大雨,百姓歡慶。

Naehae Isageum ascended the throne. He was a grandson of King Beolhyu. His mother was Lady Naerye, and his queen was of the house of Seok, a sister of King Jobun. He was great and striking in form and bearing, and he had rare gifts.

The former king's crown prince Goljeong and his second son Imae had died before him, and the eldest grandson was still young, so the son of Imae was raised up. This was Naehae Isageum.

That year no rain fell from the first month to the fourth. When the day came for the king to ascend the throne, heavy rain fell, and the people rejoiced.

2Second year — he attends at the shrine of the founder

二年,春正月,謁始祖廟。

In the second year, in spring, the first month, he attended at the shrine of the founder.

3Third year — a fallen willow rises

三年,夏四月,始祖廟前臥柳自起。五月,國西大水,免遭水州縣一年租調。秋七月,遣使撫問。

In the third year, in summer, the fourth month, a willow that lay fallen before the shrine of the founder rose up of itself. In the fifth month there was a great flood in the west of the country, so the provinces and counties that had suffered it were freed from a year's taxes. In autumn, the seventh month, envoys were sent to comfort them.

4Fourth year — Baekje comes into the border

四年,秋七月,百濟侵境。

In the fourth year, in autumn, the seventh month, Baekje came into the border.

5Fifth year — Taibai is seen by day

五年,秋七月,太白晝見。隕霜殺草。九月庚午朔,

In the fifth year, in autumn, the seventh month, Taibai (太白) was seen by day. Frost fell and killed the grass. In the ninth month, on the first day gyeongo,

7Sixth year — Gaya asks for peace

六年,春二月,加耶國請和。三月丁卯朔,日有食之。大旱,錄内外繫囚,原輕罪。

In the sixth year, in spring, the second month, the state of Gaya asked for peace. In the third month, on the first day jeongmyo, the sun was eclipsed. There was a great drought, so the prisoners held within the capital and without were looked into, and the lighter offenses were pardoned.

8Eighth year — the Malgal come into the border

八年,冬十月,靺鞨犯境。桃李華。人大疫。

In the eighth year, in winter, the tenth month, the Malgal came into the border. The peach and the plum flowered. A great pestilence went about among the people.

9Tenth year — a fox cries out

十年,春二月,拜眞忠爲一伐飡,以參國政。秋七月,霜雹殺穀。太白犯月。八月,狐鳴金城及始祖廟庭。

In the tenth year, in spring, the second month, Jinchung was made ilbeolchan and took part in the government of the country. In autumn, the seventh month, frost and hail killed the grain. Taibai (太白) trespassed on the moon. In the eighth month a fox cried out at Geumseong and in the courtyard of the shrine of the founder.

10Twelfth year — Prince Ieum is given charge of military affairs

十二年,春正月,拜王子利音爲伊伐飡,兼知内外兵馬事。

In the twelfth year, in spring, the first month, the king's son Ieum was made ibeolchan and given charge as well of military affairs within and without.

11Thirteenth year — the Wa come into the border

十三年,春二月,西巡郡邑,浹旬而返。夏四月,倭人犯境。遣伊伐飡利音,將兵拒之。

In the thirteenth year, in spring, the second month, the king went round the commanderies and towns of the west and came back after ten days. In summer, the fourth month, the Wa (倭人) came into the border, so the ibeolchan Ieum was sent to lead troops and hold them off.

12Fourteenth year — the eight states of Posang strike Gara

十四年,秋七月,浦上八國謀侵加羅。加羅王子來請救。王命太子于老與伊伐飡利音,將六部兵往救之。擊殺八國將軍,奪所虜六千人,還之。

In the fourteenth year, in autumn, the seventh month, the eight states of Posang (浦上) plotted to fall upon Gara (加羅). A prince of Gara came and asked for rescue, so the king ordered the crown prince Uro and the ibeolchan Ieum to lead the troops of the six divisions and go to the rescue. They struck down and killed the generals of the eight states, took back the six thousand people who had been carried off, and sent them home.

13Fifteenth year — the prisoners are looked into

十五年,春夏旱,發使錄郡邑獄囚。除二死,餘悉原之。

In the fifteenth year there was drought in spring and summer, so envoys were sent to look into the prisoners held in the jails of the commanderies and towns. All but those held for the two capital crimes were pardoned.

14Sixteenth year — offices are granted

十六年,春正月,拜萱堅爲伊飡,允宗爲一吉飡。

In the sixteenth year, in spring, the first month, Hwongyeon was made ichan and Yunjong ilgilchan.

In the nineteenth year, in spring, the third month, a great wind blew and broke the trees. In autumn, the seventh month, Baekje came and struck Yochaseong in the west of the country and killed Seolbu, the lord of the fort. The king ordered the ibeolchan Ieum to lead six thousand picked troops, strike Baekje, and break Saseong (沙城). In winter, the twelfth month, there was thunder.

18Twenty-third year — the weapons in the armory come out of themselves

二十三年,秋七月,武庫兵物自出。百濟人來圍山城。王親率兵出擊走之。

In the twenty-third year, in autumn, the seventh month, the weapons in the armory came out of themselves. People of Baekje came and surrounded the mountain fort, so the king led out troops himself, struck them, and drove them off.

19Twenty-fifth year — Ieum dies

二十五年,春三月,伊伐飡利音卒。以忠萱爲伊伐飡,兼知兵馬事。秋七月,大閱楊山西。

In the twenty-fifth year, in spring, the third month, the ibeolchan Ieum died. Chunghwon was made ibeolchan and given charge as well of military affairs. In autumn, the seventh month, there was a great review west of Yangsan.

20Twenty-seventh year — Chunghwon is beaten and set down as jinju

二十七年,夏四月,雹傷菽麥,南新縣人死。歴月復活。冬十月,百濟兵入牛頭州。伊伐飡忠萱,將兵拒之。至熊谷,爲賊所敗,單騎而返,貶爲鎭主。以連珍爲伊伐飡,兼知兵馬事。

In the twenty-seventh year, in summer, the fourth month, hail harmed the beans and the barley. A man of Namsin county died and came back to life after a month had passed. In winter, the tenth month, Baekje troops came into Uduju, so the ibeolchan Chunghwon led troops to hold them off. He reached Unggok, was beaten by the enemy, and came back alone on horseback, so he was set down to be jinju (鎭主). Yeonjin was made ibeolchan and given charge as well of military affairs.

21Twenty-ninth year — Baekje is broken below Bongsan

二十九年,秋七月,伊伐飡連珍與百濟戰烽山下,破之,殺獲一千餘級。八月,築烽山城。

In the twenty-ninth year, in autumn, the seventh month, the ibeolchan Yeonjin fought Baekje below Bongsan and broke them, killing and taking more than a thousand heads. In the eighth month Bongsanseong was built.

22Thirty-first year — the granaries are opened

三十一年,春不雨,至秋七月,乃雨。民飢,發倉廩賑給。冬十月。錄内外獄囚,原輕罪。

In the thirty-first year no rain fell in spring, and only in autumn, the seventh month, did it rain. The people went hungry, so the granaries were opened and grain was given out. In winter, the tenth month, the prisoners held within the capital and without were looked into, and the lighter offenses were pardoned.

23Thirty-second year — he goes round the towns of the southwest

三十二年,春二月,巡狩西南郡邑,三月還。拜波珍飡康萱爲伊飡。

In the thirty-second year, in spring, the second month, he went round and looked over the commanderies and towns of the southwest, and came back in the third month. The pajinchan Ganghwon was made ichan.

24Thirty-fourth year — a snake cries and heavy snow falls

三十四年,夏四月,虵鳴南庫三日。秋九月,地震。冬十月,大雪,深五尺。

In the thirty-fourth year, in summer, the fourth month, a snake cried in the southern storehouse for three days. In autumn, the ninth month, the earth shook. In winter, the tenth month, heavy snow fell and lay five cheok deep.

25Thirty-fifth year — the king dies

三十五年,春三月,王薨。
