Samguk Sagi (History of the Three Kingdoms) Annals of Silla The oldest surviving history of Korea. It is made up of the annals of Silla, Goguryeo and Baekje, together with the treatises, the tables and the biographies. Kim Busik set his own judgments here and there in passages marked as his comment, so what the compiler doubted and what he rebuked stands there still.

1Jobun Isageum ascends the throne

助賁尼師今立,姓昔氏,伐休尼師今之孫也。父骨正葛文王。母,金氏玉帽夫人,仇道葛文王之女;妃,阿爾兮夫人,奈解王之女也。前王將死,遺言以壻助賁繼位。王身長,美儀表。臨事明斷,國人畏敬之。

Jobun Isageum ascended the throne. His surname was Seok, and he was a grandson of Beolhyu Isageum. His father was Goljeong Galmunwang, his mother was Lady Okmo of the house of Kim, the daughter of Gudo Galmunwang, and his queen was Lady Aihye, the daughter of King Naehae.

When the former king was about to die, he left word that his son-in-law Jobun should take the throne after him. The king was tall, and his bearing was fine. He judged clearly when a matter came before him, and the people of the country feared and honored him.

In the second year, in autumn, the seventh month, the ichan Uro was made great general. He struck and broke the state of Gammun, and its land was made a commandery.

5Third year — the Wa surround Geumseong

三年,夏四月,倭人猝至圍金城。王親出戰,賊潰走,遣輕騎追擊之,殺獲一千餘級。

In the third year, in summer, the fourth month, the Wa (倭人) came all at once and surrounded Geumseong. The king went out and fought them himself, and the enemy broke and fled. Light horsemen were sent to chase and strike them, and they killed and took more than a thousand heads.

6Fourth year — Uro burns the ships at Sado

四年,夏四月,大風飛屋瓦。五月,倭兵寇東邊。秋七月,伊飡于老與倭人戰沙道,乘風縱火焚舟,賊赴水死盡。

In the fourth year, in summer, the fourth month, a great wind blew and sent roof tiles flying. In the fifth month Wa troops (倭兵) plundered the eastern border. In autumn, the seventh month, the ichan Uro fought the Wa at Sado. He set fire with the wind behind him and burned their ships, and the enemy threw themselves into the water and all died.

7Sixth year — he goes round the east and comforts the people

六年,春正月,東巡撫恤。

In the sixth year, in spring, the first month, he went round the east, comforting and relieving the people.

8Seventh year — the state of Golbeol surrenders

七年,春二月,骨伐國王阿音夫,率衆來降。賜第宅、田莊安之。以其地爲郡。

In the seventh year, in spring, the second month, Aeumbu, king of the state of Golbeol, led his people and came to surrender. He was given a house and fields and settled at ease, and his land was made a commandery.

9Eighth year — locusts harm the grain

八年,秋八月,蝗害穀。

In the eighth year, in autumn, the eighth month, locusts harmed the grain.

10Eleventh year — Baekje comes into the western border

十一年,百濟侵西邊。

In the eleventh year Baekje came into the western border.

11Thirteenth year — a great harvest

十三年,秋,大有年。古陀郡進嘉禾。

In the thirteenth year, in autumn, there was a great harvest. Gota commandery presented an auspicious stalk of rice.

十五年,春正月,拜伊飡于老爲舒弗邯,兼知兵馬事。

In the fifteenth year, in spring, the first month, the ichan Uro was made seobulhan and given charge as well of military affairs.

13Sixteenth year — Uro burns brushwood himself to warm his troops

十六年,冬十月,高句麗侵北邊。于老將兵出擊之,不克,退保馬頭柵。其夜苦寒,于老勞士卒,躬

In the sixteenth year, in winter, the tenth month, Goguryeo came into the northern border. Uro led troops out and struck them but could not win, so he drew back and held the palisade at Madu. That night the cold was bitter, so Uro comforted his soldiers and with his own hands

14Sixteenth year — every heart is moved

燒柴煖之,羣心感激。

15Seventeenth year — a white vapor and an earthquake

十七年,冬十月,東南有白氣如匹練。十一月,京都地震。

In the seventeenth year, in winter, the tenth month, a white vapor lay in the southeast like a bolt of silk. In the eleventh month the earth shook in the capital.

16Eighteenth year — the king dies

十八年,夏五月,王薨。

In the eighteenth year, in summer, the fifth month, the king died.
