Samguk Sagi (History of the Three Kingdoms) Annals of Silla The oldest surviving history of Korea. It is made up of the annals of Silla, Goguryeo and Baekje, together with the treatises, the tables and the biographies. Kim Busik set his own judgments here and there in passages marked as his comment, so what the compiler doubted and what he rebuked stands there still.

1Cheomhae Isageum ascends the throne

沾解尼師今立,助賁王同母弟也。

Cheomhae Isageum ascended the throne. He was the younger brother of King Jobun by the same mother.

2First year — his father is invested as Galmunwang

元年,秋七月,謁始祖廟。封父骨正爲世神葛文王。

In the first year, in autumn, the seventh month, he attended at the shrine of the founder. He invested his father Goljeong as Sesin Galmunwang.

3Historian's comment — he who is made another's heir becomes that man's son

論曰:漢宣帝卽位,有司奏:「爲人後者爲之子也。故降其父母不得祭,尊祖之義也。是以帝所生父稱親,諡曰悼,母曰悼后,比諸侯王。」此合經義,

When Emperor Xuan of Han ascended the throne, the officers in charge submitted this. "He who is made another's heir becomes that man's son. Therefore he sets his own father and mother lower and may not sacrifice to them, and this is what honoring the ancestors means. So the father who begot the emperor is called qin (親), his posthumous name is Dao (悼), and his mother is called Dao hou (悼后), ranked with the kings of the feudal states." became a law for ten thousand generations. So Emperor Guangwu of the Later Han and Yingzong of Song took it as their model and acted on it.

In Silla, among the rulers who came in from the royal kin to carry on the great succession, there is not one who failed to honor his own father and invest him as king. Nor is that all: there are cases where a father-in-law was invested as well. This is not according to rite, and it truly cannot be made a law.

5Second year — peace is made with Goguryeo

二年,春正月,以伊飡長萱爲舒弗邯,以參國政。二月,遣使高句麗結和。

In the second year, in spring, the first month, the ichan Janghwon was made seobulhan and took part in the government of the country. In the second month an envoy was sent to Goguryeo and peace was made.

6Third year — the Wa kill the seobulhan Uro

三年,夏四月,倭人殺舒弗邯于老。秋七月,作南堂於宮南,以良夫爲伊飡。

In the third year, in summer, the fourth month, the Wa (倭人) killed the seobulhan Uro. In autumn, the seventh month, the Namdang (南堂) was built south of the palace, and Yangbu was made ichan.

7Fifth year — he hears government in the Namdang

In the fifth year, in spring, the first month, he began for the first time to hear government in the Namdang. A man of Hangi division named Budo (夫道)

8Fifth year — Budo is made achan

家貧無諂。工書算,著名於時。王徵之爲阿飡,委以物藏庫事務。

was poor in his house but never fawning. He was skilled in writing and reckoning, and his name was known in his time. The king called him up, made him achan, and put him in charge of the affairs of the Muljanggo (物藏庫).

9Seventh year — prayer at the shrine of the founder brings rain

七年,夏四月,龍見宮東池。金城南臥柳自起。自五月至七月不雨,禱祀始祖廟及名山,乃雨。年饑,多盜賊。

In the seventh year, in summer, the fourth month, a dragon appeared in the pond east of the palace. A willow that lay fallen south of Geumseong rose up of itself. No rain fell from the fifth month to the seventh, so prayer and sacrifice were made at the shrine of the founder and at the famed mountains, and then it rained. That year was lean, and there were many thieves.

10Ninth year — Ikjong dies at Goegok

九年,秋九月,百濟來侵。一伐飡翊宗,逆戰於槐谷西,爲賊所殺。冬十月,百濟攻烽山城,不下。

In the ninth year, in autumn, the ninth month, Baekje came in and raided. The ilbeolchan Ikjong met them in battle west of Goegok and was killed by the enemy. In winter, the tenth month, Baekje struck Bongsanseong but could not take it.

11Tenth year — three great fish come out

十年,春三月,國東海出大魚三,長三丈,高丈有二尺。冬十月晦,日有食之。

In the tenth year, in spring, the third month, three great fish came out of the sea east of the country. They were three jang long and one jang two cheok high. In winter, the tenth month, on the last day, the sun was eclipsed.

12Thirteenth year — a lean year and many thieves

十三年,秋七月,旱、蝗。年荒,多盜。

In the thirteenth year, in autumn, the seventh month, there was drought and there were locusts. The year was lean, and there were many thieves.

13Fourteenth year — hills fall in more than forty places

十四年,夏,大雨。山崩四十餘所。秋七月,星孛于東方,二十五日而滅。

In the fourteenth year, in summer, heavy rain fell. Hills fell in more than forty places. In autumn, the seventh month, a comet appeared in the east and faded away after twenty-five days.

14Fifteenth year — the king dies all at once

十五年,春二月,築達伐城,以奈麻克宗爲城主。三月,百濟遣使請和,不許。冬十二月二十八日,王暴疾,薨。

In the fifteenth year, in spring, the second month, Dalbeolseong was built, and the nama Geukjong was made lord of the fort. In the third month Baekje sent an envoy to ask for peace, but it was not allowed. In winter, the twelfth month, on the twenty-eighth day, the king fell suddenly ill and died.
