Samguk Sagi (History of the Three Kingdoms) Annals of Silla The oldest surviving history of Korea. It is made up of the annals of Silla, Goguryeo and Baekje, together with the treatises, the tables and the biographies. Kim Busik set his own judgments here and there in passages marked as his comment, so what the compiler doubted and what he rebuked stands there still.

1Michu Isageum ascends the throne

味鄒尼師今立,姓金。母,朴氏,葛文王伊柒之女;妃,昔氏光明夫人,助賁王之女。其先,閼智出於雞林,脫解王得之,養於宮中,後拜爲大輔。

Michu Isageum ascended the throne. His surname was Kim. His mother was of the house of Bak, the daughter of Ichil Galmunwang, and his queen was Lady Gwangmyeong of the house of Seok, the daughter of King Jobun. His forefather Alji came out of Gyerim. King Talhae found him, raised him in the palace, and later made him daebo.

2The beginning of the house of Kim holding the country

閼智生勢漢,勢漢生阿道,阿道生首留,首留生郁甫,郁甫生仇道,仇道則味鄒之考也。沾解無子,國人立味鄒。此金氏有國之始也。

Alji begot Sehan, Sehan begot Ado, Ado begot Suryu, Suryu begot Ukbo, and Ukbo begot Gudo, and Gudo was the father of Michu. Cheomhae had no son, so the people of the country raised Michu up. This was the beginning of the house of Kim holding the country.

3First year — fire at the west gate of Geumseong

元年,春三月,龍見宮東池。秋七月,金城西門災。延燒人家三百餘區。

In the first year, in spring, the third month, a dragon appeared in the pond east of the palace. In autumn, the seventh month, fire broke out at the west gate of Geumseong, and it spread and burned more than three hundred houses of the people.

4Second year — his father Gudo is invested as Galmunwang

二年,春正月,拜伊飡良夫爲舒弗邯,兼知內外兵馬事。二月,親祀國祖廟,大赦。封考仇道爲葛文王。

In the second year, in spring, the first month, the ichan Yangbu was made seobulhan and given charge as well of military affairs within and without. In the second month he sacrificed in person at the shrine of the country's ancestor, and a great amnesty was granted. He invested his father Gudo as Galmunwang.

5Third year — he comforts the aged at Hwangsan

三年,春二月,東巡幸望海。三月,幸黃山,問高年及貧不能自存者,賑恤之。

In the third year, in spring, the second month, he went round the east and looked out over the sea. In the third month he went to Hwangsan, asked after those advanced in years and those too poor to keep themselves, and gave them relief.

6Fifth year — Jikseon holds Bongsanseong

五年,秋八月,百濟來攻烽山城。城主直宣,率壯士二百人,出擊之,賊敗走。王聞之,拜直宣爲一吉飡,厚賞士卒。

In the fifth year, in autumn, the eighth month, Baekje came and struck Bongsanseong. Jikseon, the lord of the fort, led out two hundred strong men and struck them, and the enemy was beaten and fled. When the king heard of it he made Jikseon ilgilchan and rewarded the soldiers richly.

7Seventh year — he asks in the Namdang what is right and wrong in the government

七年,春夏不雨。會羣臣於南堂,親問政刑得失,又遣使五人,巡問百姓苦患。

In the seventh year no rain fell in spring or summer. He gathered his officials in the Namdang and asked them himself what was right and wrong in the government and the punishments, and he sent out five envoys as well to go round and ask after the hardships of the people.

8Eleventh year — whatever harms farming is done away with

十一年,春二月,下令:凡有害農事者,一切除之。秋七月,霜雹害穀。冬十一月,百濟侵邊。

In the eleventh year, in spring, the second month, an order went out: "Whatever harms the work of farming, let it all be done away with." In autumn, the seventh month, frost and hail harmed the grain. In winter, the eleventh month, Baekje came into the border.

9Fifteenth year — he will not have the palace rebuilt

十五年,春二月,臣寮請改作宮室。上重勞人,不從。

In the fifteenth year, in spring, the second month, the officials asked that the palace buildings be built anew. The king held it a heavy thing to put people to labor, and he would not follow them.

10Seventeenth year — Baekje surrounds Goegokseong

十七年,夏四月,暴風拔木。冬十月,百濟兵來圍槐谷城,命波珍飡正源領兵拒之。

In the seventeenth year, in summer, the fourth month, a fierce wind blew and tore up the trees. In winter, the tenth month, Baekje troops came and surrounded Goegokseong, so the pajinchan Jeongwon was ordered to lead troops and hold them off.

11Nineteenth year — the prisoners are looked into

十九年,夏四月,旱。錄囚。

In the nineteenth year, in summer, the fourth month, there was drought. The prisoners were looked into.

12Twentieth year — a review west of Yangsan

二十年,春正月,拜弘權爲伊飡,良質爲一吉飡,光謙爲沙飡。二月,謁祖廟。秋九月,大閱楊山西。

In the twentieth year, in spring, the first month, Honggwon was made ichan, Yangjil ilgilchan, and Gwanggyeom sachan. In the second month he attended at the ancestral shrine. In autumn, the ninth month, there was a great review west of Yangsan.

13Twenty-second year — Baekje surrounds Goegokseong

二十二年,秋九月,百濟侵邊。冬十月,圍槐谷城,命一吉飡良質,領兵禦之。

In the twenty-second year, in autumn, the ninth month, Baekje came into the border. In winter, the tenth month, they surrounded Goegokseong, so the ilgilchan Yangjil was ordered to lead troops and hold them off.

14Twenty-third year — the king dies

二十三年。春二月,巡撫國西諸城。冬十月,王薨,葬大陵

In the twenty-third year, in spring, the second month, he went round the forts in the west of the country and comforted the people there. In winter, the tenth month, the king died, and he was buried at Daereung (大陵).
