Samguk Sagi (History of the Three Kingdoms) Annals of Silla The oldest surviving history of Korea. It is made up of the annals of Silla, Goguryeo and Baekje, together with the treatises, the tables and the biographies. Kim Busik set his own judgments here and there in passages marked as his comment, so what the compiler doubted and what he rebuked stands there still.

1Nulji Maripgan ascends the throne

Nulji Maripgan (麻立干) ascended the throne. He was a son of King Naemul. His mother was Lady Boban, a daughter of King Michu, and his queen was a daughter of King Silseong.

In the thirty-seventh year of King Naemul, Silseong was sent to Goguryeo as a hostage. When Silseong came back and became king, he bore a grudge that Naemul had sent him as a hostage to another country, and he wished to harm Naemul's son and pay the grudge back. He sent a man to call one he had known while he was in Goguryeo, and told him in secret, "When you see Nulji, kill him." Then he had Nulji go out, and had the man meet him on the road.

The man of Goguryeo saw Nulji, and his form and his spirit were fresh and graceful, and he had the bearing of a gentleman. At last he spoke to him. "The king of your country told me to harm you, but now that I have seen you, I cannot bear to do you harm." Then he went back.

Nulji bore a grudge for this, and he killed the king instead and set himself on the throne.
