Samguk Sagi (History of the Three Kingdoms) Annals of Silla The oldest surviving history of Korea. It is made up of the annals of Silla, Goguryeo and Baekje, together with the treatises, the tables and the biographies. Kim Busik set his own judgments here and there in passages marked as his comment, so what the compiler doubted and what he rebuked stands there still.

1King Heongang ascends the throne

憲康王立。諱晸,景文王之太子。母,文懿王后;妃,懿明夫人。王性聰敏,愛看書,目所一覽,皆誦於口。卽位,拜伊飡魏弘爲上大等,大阿飡乂謙爲侍中,大赦內外殊死已下。

King Heongang ascended the throne. His name was Jeong (晸), and he was the crown prince of King Gyeongmun. His mother was Queen Munui, and his queen was Lady Uimyeong. The king was clever and quick by nature and loved to look at books, and whatever his eyes passed over once he recited with his mouth. When he came to the throne he made Wihong of the rank of ichan sangdaedeung and Yegyeom of the rank of daeachan sijung, and within and without he greatly pardoned all but those held for capital crimes.

2Second year — the hundred high seats are set out

二年,春二月,皇龍寺齋僧,設百高座講經,王親幸聽之。秋七月,遣使入唐貢方物。

In the second year, in spring, the second month, a fast was given for the monks at Hwangnyongsa, and the hundred high seats were set out for the expounding of the scriptures, and the king went there himself and listened. In autumn, the seventh month, an envoy was sent into the Tang to present the products of this land.

3Third year — Great King Taejo is born

三年,春正月,我太祖大王,生於松岳郡。

In the third year, in spring, the first month, our Great King Taejo was born in Songak-gun (松岳郡).

4Fourth year — they hear that Huang Chao has risen and stop

四年,夏四月,唐僖宗降使,冊封王爲使持節開府儀同三司檢校太尉大都督雞林州諸軍事新羅王,秋七月,遣使朝唐,聞黃巢賊起,乃止。八月,日本國使至,王引見於朝元殿。

In the fourth year, in summer, the fourth month, Xizong of the Tang sent an envoy and invested the king as commissioner bearing the tally, grand minister with honors equal to the three offices, acting grand commandant, grand governor and commander of all military affairs of Gyerimju, and King of Silla.

In autumn, the seventh month, an envoy was to be sent to pay court to the Tang, but they heard word that the brigand Huang Chao had risen, and so it was stopped. In the eighth month an envoy of the country of Japan arrived, and the king drew him in and saw him at the Joweonjeon.

5Fifth year — the spirits of the mountains and the sea appear

五年,春二月,幸國學,命博士已下講論。三月,巡幸國東州郡,有不知所從來四人,詣駕前歌舞,形容可駭,衣巾詭異,時人謂之山海精靈古記謂,王卽位元年事,夏六月,一吉飡信弘叛,伏誅,冬十月御遵禮門觀射。十一月,獵穴城原。

In the fifth year, in spring, the second month, he went to the National Academy and commanded the baksa and those below them to expound.

In the third month he went round the ju and the commanderies in the east of the country. Four men, and no one knew where they had come from, came before the king's carriage and sang and danced. Their shapes were such as to startle, and their clothes and head cloths were strange, and the people of that time called them the spirits of the mountains and the sea. — The Gogi says this was a matter of the first year of the king's reign.

In summer, the sixth month, Sinhong of the rank of ilgilchan revolted and was put to death. In winter, the tenth month, he went to the Junye gate and watched the archery. In the eleventh month he hunted on the plain of Hyeolseong.

6Sixth year — roofs are covered with tile and rice is cooked with charcoal

六年,春二月,太白犯月。侍中乂謙退,伊飡敏恭爲侍中。秋八月,熊州進嘉禾。九月九日,王與左右,登月上樓,四望,京都民屋相屬,歌吹連聲。王顧謂侍中敏恭曰:「孤聞今之民間,覆屋以瓦不以茅,炊飯以炭不以薪,有是耶?」敏恭對曰:「臣亦嘗聞之如此」因奏曰:「上卽位以來,陰陽和,風雨順,歲有年,民足食,邊境謐靜,市井歡娛。此聖德之所致也。」王欣然曰:「此,卿等輔佐之力也,朕何德焉?」

In the sixth year, in spring, the second month, Taebaek trespassed on the moon. Yegyeom the sijung withdrew, and Mingong the ichan was made sijung.

In autumn, the eighth month, Ungju presented a fair stalk of grain.

On the ninth day of the ninth month the king went up the Wolsangnu with those about him and looked out on the four sides. The houses of the people of the capital stood one against another, and the sound of song and piping went on without a break. The king looked round at Mingong the sijung and said, "I hear that these days among the people the roofs are covered with tile and not with thatch, and the rice is cooked with charcoal and not with firewood. Is it so?"

Mingong answered, "I too have heard that it is so." Then he said, "Since your majesty came to the throne the yin and the yang have been in accord, the wind and the rain have been mild, there has been a full harvest year by year and the people have food enough, the borders are quiet and still and the marketplaces are merry. This is what your holy virtue has brought about."

The king was glad and said, "This is the strength of you lords who help me. What virtue is there in me?"

7Seventh year — a feast at the Imhaejeon

七年,春三月,燕羣臣於臨海殿,酒酣上鼓琴,左右各進歌詞,極歡而罷。

In the seventh year, in spring, the third month, a feast was given to the many subjects at the Imhaejeon. When the wine was at its height the king played the geomungo, and those about him each offered up words of song, and they took their delight to the full and then broke up.

8Eighth year — the king of Japan presents yellow gold

八年,夏四月,日本國王遣使,進黃金三百兩、明珠一十箇。冬十二月,枯彌縣女,一産三男。

In the eighth year, in summer, the fourth month, the king of the country of Japan sent an envoy and presented three hundred nyang of yellow gold and ten bright pearls. In winter, the twelfth month, a woman of Gomi district bore three sons at one birth.

9Ninth year — the civil officials are made to compose poems

九年,春二月,王幸三郞寺,命文臣各賦詩一首。

In the ninth year, in spring, the second month, the king went to Samnangsa and commanded the civil officials each to compose one poem.

10Eleventh year — they offer congratulations on the breaking of Huang Chao

十一年,春二月,虎入宮庭。三月,崔致遠還。冬十月壬子,太白晝見。遣使入唐,賀破黃巢賊。

In the eleventh year, in spring, the second month, a tiger came into the courtyard of the palace. In the third month Choe Chiwon came back. In winter, on the imja day of the tenth month, Taebaek was seen by day. An envoy was sent into the Tang to offer congratulations on the breaking of the brigand Huang Chao.

11Twelfth year — King Heongang dies

十二年,春,北鎭奏:「狄國人入鎭,以片木掛樹而歸。」遂取以獻,其木書十五字云:「寶露國與黑水國人,共向新羅國和通。」夏六月,王不豫,赦國內獄囚。又於皇龍寺,設百高座講經。秋七月五日,薨。諡曰憲康,葬菩提寺東南。

In the twelfth year, in spring, the northern garrison reported, "Men of the barbarian country came into the garrison, hung a slip of wood on a tree, and went back." Then they took it and presented it, and on that wood fifteen characters were written, saying, "The men of the country of Boro and the country of Heuksu together turn toward the country of Silla and would join with it in peace."

In summer, the sixth month, the king was unwell, and he pardoned the prisoners in the jails within the country. He also set out the hundred high seats at Hwangnyongsa for the expounding of the scriptures.

In autumn, on the fifth day of the seventh month, he died. He was given the posthumous name Heongang (憲康), and he was buried southeast of Borisa.
