Samguk Sagi (History of the Three Kingdoms) Annals of Goguryeo The oldest surviving history of Korea. It is made up of the annals of Silla, Goguryeo and Baekje, together with the treatises, the tables and the biographies. Kim Busik set his own judgments here and there in passages marked as his comment, so what the compiler doubted and what he rebuked stands there still.

1King Gwanggaeto ascends the throne

廣開土王,諱談德,故國壤王之子。生而雄偉,有倜儻之志。故國壤王三年,立為太子。八年,王薨,太子卽位。秋七月,南伐百濟,拔十城。九月,北伐契丹,虜男女五百口,又招諭本國陷沒民口一萬而歸。冬十月,攻陷百濟關彌城。其城四面峭絶,海水環繞,王分軍七道,攻擊二十日,乃拔。

King Gwanggaeto's name was Damdeok (談德), and he was the son of King Gogugyang. From his birth he was bold and outstanding, and he had a great will in him that nothing could bind. In the third year of King Gogugyang he was set up as crown prince. In the eighth year the king died, and the crown prince ascended the throne.

In autumn, the seventh month, he went south and attacked Baekje, and took ten fortresses. In the ninth month he went north and attacked the Khitan. He took five hundred men and women captive, and he also called back and brought home ten thousand people of his own country who had been carried off there.

In winter, the tenth month, he attacked the fortress of Gwanmi in Baekje and took it. That fortress was cut off sheer on all four sides and ringed about by the sea water, so the king divided his army into seven roads and attacked for twenty days, and only then took it.

2The second year — nine temples are built at Pyeongyang

二年,秋八月,百濟侵南邊,命將拒之。創九寺於平壤。

In the second year, in autumn, the eighth month, Baekje raided the southern border, and he ordered his generals to block them. He built nine temples at Pyeongyang.

3The third year — seven fortresses are built in the south of the country

三年,秋七月,百濟來侵。王率精騎五千,逆擊敗之,餘寇夜走。八月,築國南七城,以備百濟之寇。

In the third year, in autumn, the seventh month, Baekje came to raid. The king led five thousand picked horsemen, met them and struck them and broke them, and the robbers who were left fled in the night. In the eighth month he built seven fortresses in the south of the country, to be ready for the raids of Baekje.

4The fourth year — a great victory at the Paesu

四年,秋八月,王與百濟,戰於浿水之上,大敗之,虜獲八千餘級。

In the fourth year, in autumn, the eighth month, the king fought with Baekje on the Paesu and broke them greatly, and took more than eight thousand heads.

5The ninth year — Yan takes Sinseong and Namso

九年,春正月,王遣使入燕朝貢。二月,燕王盛,以我王禮慢,自將兵三萬襲之。以驃騎大將軍慕容熙,為前鋒,拔新城、南蘇二城,拓地七百餘里,徙五千餘戶而還。

In the ninth year, in spring, the first month, the king sent an envoy into Yan and offered tribute. In the second month Murong Sheng, the king of Yan, said that the courtesy of the king of Goguryeo was haughty, and he himself led thirty thousand soldiers and fell upon him. He made Murong Xi, the grand general of the fleet cavalry, his vanguard, took the two fortresses of Sinseong and Namso, widened his land by more than seven hundred li, moved more than five thousand households, and went back.

6The eleventh year — he attacks Sujun

十一年,王遣兵攻宿軍,燕平州刺史慕容歸,棄城走。

In the eleventh year, the king sent soldiers and attacked Sujun, and Murong Gui, the inspector of Pingzhou in Yan, left the fortress and fled.

7The thirteenth year — he raids Yan

十三年,冬十一月,出師侵燕。

In the thirteenth year, in winter, the eleventh month, he sent out his army and raided Yan.

8The fourteenth year — Murong Xi attacks the fortress of Liaodong

十四年,春正月,燕王熙來攻遼東城。且陷,熙命將士:「毋得先登,俟剗平其城,朕與皇后,乘轝而入。」由是,城中得嚴備,卒不克而還。

In the fourteenth year, in spring, the first month, Murong Xi, the king of Yan, came and attacked the fortress of Liaodong. It was about to fall, and Murong Xi ordered his officers and soldiers, "Do not climb up first. Wait until the fortress is shaved level, and I and the empress will ride in together in a carriage." Because of this those inside the fortress were able to make a close guard, and in the end he did not win, and went back.

9The fifteenth year — he attacks the fortress of Mokjeo and turns back

十五年,秋七月,蝗,旱。冬十二月,燕王熙襲契丹,至陘北,畏契丹之衆,欲還。遂棄輜重,輕兵襲我。燕軍行三千餘里,士馬疲凍,死者屬路。攻我木底城,不克而還。

In the fifteenth year, in autumn, the seventh month, locusts came and there was a drought.

In winter, the twelfth month, Murong Xi, the king of Yan, went to fall upon the Khitan and came as far as Xingbei. He feared the numbers of the Khitan and wanted to go back. So he threw away his baggage train and fell upon Goguryeo with light troops. The army of Yan marched more than three thousand li, and the soldiers and the horses were worn out and frozen, and the dead lay one after another along the road. They attacked the fortress of Mokjeo in Goguryeo, did not win, and went back.

10The sixteenth year — he repairs the palace further

十六年,春二月,增修宮闕。

In the sixteenth year, in spring, the second month, he repaired the palace further.

11The seventeenth year — he and Northern Yan tell each other their kinship

十七年,春三月,遣使北燕,且叙宗族,北燕王雲,遣侍御史李拔報之。雲祖父高和,句麗之支屬,自云高陽氏之苗裔,故以高為氏焉。慕容寶之為太子,雲以武藝,侍東宮,寶子之,賜姓慕容氏。

In the seventeenth year, in spring, the third month, he sent an envoy to Northern Yan and also told out their kinship, and Yun, the king of Northern Yan, sent Li Ba, the attending censor, to answer him. Yun's grandfather Go Hwa was of a branch of the house of Goguryeo, and he said of himself that he was a distant offspring of the Gaoyang, and so he took Go (高) as his surname. When Murong Bao was crown prince, Yun served the eastern palace by his skill in arms, and so Murong Bao made him a son and granted him the surname Murong.

12The eighteenth year — Georyeon is made crown prince

十八年,夏四月,立王子巨連,為太子。秋七月,築國東禿山等六城,移平壤民戶。八月,王南巡。

In the eighteenth year, in summer, the fourth month, he set up his son Georyeon as crown prince. In autumn, the seventh month, he built six fortresses in the east of the country, Doksan and the rest, and moved households of the people of Pyeongyang there. In the eighth month the king went about the south.

13The twenty-second year — King Gwanggaeto dies

二十二年,冬十月,王薨。號為廣開土王。

In the twenty-second year, in winter, the tenth month, the king died. He was called King Gwanggaeto (廣開土王).
