King Munjamyeong文咨明王

King Munjamyeong's name was Naun (羅雲), and he was the grandson of King Jangsu. His father was the prince Joda, the gochudaega, and Joda died early, so King Jangsu raised him in the palace and made him his heir as the royal grandson. King Jangsu was on the throne seventy-nine years and died, and Naun succeeded him and ascended the throne.

In the first year, in spring, the third month, Emperor Xiaowen of Wei sent an envoy and invested the king as Commissioner Bearing the Tally, Governor of All Military Affairs of Liaohai, General Who Conquers the East, Leader of Court Gentlemen in Charge of the Eastern Yi, Duke of the Commandery of Liaodong, and King of Goguryeo, and he gave him robes and a cap, court dress, and ornaments for his carriage and his banners. He also sent down an edict that the king should send his heir to court. The king declined on account of illness and sent his father's cousin Seungcheon to go to the palace in company with the envoy.

In summer, the sixth month, an envoy was sent to enter Wei and bring tribute. In autumn, the eighth month, an envoy was sent to enter Wei and bring tribute. In winter, the tenth month, an envoy was sent to enter Wei and bring tribute.

In the second year, in winter, the tenth month, the earth shook.

In the third year, in spring, the first month, an envoy was sent to enter Wei and bring tribute. In the second month the king of Buyeo gave up his country and came and surrendered, together with his wife and his children.

In autumn, the seventh month, the Goguryeo army fought the men of Silla on the plain of Salsu. The men of Silla were beaten and held Gyeonaseong, and the Goguryeo army surrounded it. Baekje sent three thousand soldiers to aid Silla, and the Goguryeo army drew back.

The emperor of Qi invested the king as Commissioner Bearing the Tally, Cavalier Attendant-in-Ordinary, Commander-in-Chief of All Military Affairs of the two prefectures of Ying and Ping, Great General Who Conquers the East, and Duke of Lelang. An envoy was sent to enter Wei and bring tribute. In winter, the tenth month, the peach and the plum came into flower.

In the fourth year, in spring, the second month, an envoy was sent to enter Wei and bring tribute. There was a great drought. In summer, the fifth month, an envoy was sent to enter Wei and bring tribute.

In autumn, the seventh month, the king toured the south, looked out over the sea, and came back. In the eighth month soldiers were sent to surround Chiyangseong of Baekje, and Baekje asked Silla for help. The king of Silla ordered the general Deokji to lead soldiers and come to the rescue, and the Goguryeo army drew back and returned.

In the fifth year the emperor of Qi raised the king to General of Chariots and Cavalry. An envoy was sent to enter Qi and bring tribute. In autumn, the seventh month, soldiers were sent to strike Usanseong of Silla. The soldiers of Silla came out to the River Iha and struck them, and the Goguryeo army was beaten and fled.

In the sixth year, in autumn, the eighth month, soldiers were sent to strike Usanseong of Silla, and they took it.

In the seventh year, in spring, the first month, the prince Heungan was set up as crown prince. In autumn, the seventh month, the temple Geumgangsa was built. In the eighth month an envoy was sent to enter Wei and bring tribute.

In the eighth year the people of Baekje went hungry, and two thousand of them came and gave themselves up.

In the ninth year, in autumn, the eighth month, an envoy was sent to enter Wei and bring tribute.

In the tenth year, in spring, the first month, an envoy was sent to enter Wei and bring tribute. In winter, the twelfth month, an envoy was sent to enter Wei and bring tribute.

In the eleventh year, in autumn, the eighth month, there were locusts. In winter, the tenth month, the earth shook, and the houses of the people fell down, and there were those who died.

Gaozu of Liang ascended the throne. In summer, the fourth month, he raised the king to Great General of Chariots and Cavalry. In winter, the eleventh month, Baekje crossed the border. In the twelfth month an envoy was sent to enter Wei and bring tribute.

In the twelfth year, in winter, the eleventh month, Baekje sent the dalsol U Yeong to lead five thousand soldiers and come to raid Sugokseong.

In the thirteenth year, in summer, the fourth month, an envoy was sent to enter Wei and bring tribute, and Shizong called in their envoy Ye Silbul and met him in the Eastern Hall.

Silbul came forward and said. "This small country has bound its sincerity to the ends of heaven, and through many generations, with pure sincerity, it has never failed in the tribute it offers to the king from the things its earth brings forth. Only, yellow gold comes out of Buyeo, and the ga (珂) is what Seomna brings forth. Buyeo has been driven out by the Mulgil, and Seomna has been swallowed up by Baekje. That these two goods do not reach the royal storehouse is truly the doing of these two robbers."

Shizong said. "Goguryeo has borne the charge of high general age after age and has ruled alone beyond the sea, and it has been able to strike all the crafty hordes of the nine Yi. When the jar is empty, it is the wine cask that is shamed. Whose fault is this? In old times, when there was a failing in what was offered, the blame lay with the yeonsol. You should set forth my will before your lord. Work out to the full the plan of awe and of embracing, cut away those who harm the multitude, and gather the eastern borderland into peace. Let the two towns win back their old ground, and let the things the earth brings forth never fail as the tribute that is always sent."

In the fifteenth year, in autumn, the eighth month, the king hunted on the south side of Yongsan and came back after five days. In the ninth month an envoy was sent to enter Wei and bring tribute. In winter, the eleventh month, a general was sent to strike Baekje. Great snow fell, and the soldiers froze until their skin cracked, so they came back.

In the sixteenth year, in winter, the tenth month, an envoy was sent to enter Wei and bring tribute. The king sent the general Goro, who took counsel with the Malgal and meant to strike Hanseong of Baekje. They went forward and made camp below Hoengak, but Baekje sent out soldiers and met them in battle, and so they drew back.

In the seventeenth year Gaozu of Liang sent down an edict that said. "The King of Goguryeo, Duke of the Commandery of Lelang, so-and-so, has shown his sincerity clear, and his tribute and his envoys follow one upon another. It is fitting that his office and his charge be raised high, and that the rule of the court be widened by it. He may be made Great General Who Soothes the Army, with an Office Opened and Ceremonial Equal to the Three Excellencies."

In summer, the fifth month, an envoy was sent to enter Wei and bring tribute. In winter, the twelfth month, an envoy was sent to enter Wei and bring tribute.

In the eighteenth year, in summer, the fifth month, an envoy was sent to enter Wei and bring tribute.

In the nineteenth year, in summer, in the intercalary sixth month, an envoy was sent to enter Wei and bring tribute. In winter, the eleventh month, an envoy was sent to enter Wei and bring tribute.

In the twenty-first year, in spring, the third month, an envoy was sent to enter Liang and bring tribute. In summer, the fifth month, an envoy was sent to enter Wei and bring tribute. In autumn, the ninth month, Baekje was raided, and the two fortresses of Gabulseong and Wonsanseong fell, and more than a thousand men and women were taken captive.

In the twenty-second year, in spring, the first month, an envoy was sent to enter Wei and bring tribute. In summer, the fifth month, an envoy was sent to enter Wei and bring tribute. In winter, the tenth month, an envoy was sent to enter Wei and bring tribute.

In the twenty-third year, in winter, the eleventh month, an envoy was sent to enter Wei and bring tribute.

In the twenty-fourth year, in winter, the tenth month, an envoy was sent to enter Wei and bring tribute.

In the twenty-fifth year, in summer, the fourth month, an envoy was sent to enter Liang and bring tribute.

In the twenty-sixth year, in summer, the fourth month, an envoy was sent to enter Wei and bring tribute.

In the twenty-seventh year, in spring, the second month, an envoy was sent to enter Wei and bring tribute. In the third month a fierce wind blew and pulled up trees, and the south gate of the royal palace fell of itself. In summer, the fourth month, an envoy was sent to enter Wei and bring tribute. In the fifth month an envoy was sent to enter Wei and bring tribute.

In the twenty-eighth year the king died. He was called King Munjamyeong (文咨明王). The Empress Dowager Ling of Wei performed the rite of mourning in the Eastern Hall and sent an envoy to invest him, granting him after his death the title of Great General of Chariots and Cavalry. At that time Suzong of Wei was ten years old, and the empress dowager came to court and took the government in hand.
