Samguk Sagi (History of the Three Kingdoms) Annals of Baekje The oldest surviving history of Korea. It is made up of the annals of Silla, Goguryeo and Baekje, together with the treatises, the tables and the biographies. Kim Busik set his own judgments here and there in passages marked as his comment, so what the compiler doubted and what he rebuked stands there still.

1King Giru ascends the throne

己婁王,多婁王之元子。志識宏遠,不留心細事。多婁王在位第六年,立為太子,至五十年,王薨,繼位。

King Giru (己婁王) was the eldest son of King Daru. His purpose and his understanding were wide and far-reaching, and he did not let his mind rest on small matters. In the sixth year of King Daru's reign he was set up as crown prince, and in the fiftieth year the king died and he came into the throne after him.

2The ninth year — a guest star enters Jamiwon

九年,春正月,遣兵侵新羅邊境。夏四月乙巳,客星入紫微。

In the ninth year, in spring, the first month, troops were sent to invade the border country of Silla. In summer, the fourth month, on the day eulsa, a guest star entered Jamiwon.

3The eleventh year — the sun is eclipsed

十一年,秋八月乙未晦,日有食之。

In the eleventh year, in autumn, the eighth month, on the last day eulmi, the sun was eclipsed.

4The thirteenth year — the earth shakes and houses sink

十三年,夏六月,地震,裂陷民屋,死者多。

In the thirteenth year, in summer, the sixth month, the earth shook, and the houses of the people split open and sank, and many died.

5The fourteenth year — there is a great drought

十四年,春三月,大旱,無麥。夏六月,大風拔木。

In the fourteenth year, in spring, the third month, there was a great drought and there was no barley. In summer, the sixth month, a great wind tore up the trees.

6The sixteenth year — the sun is eclipsed

十六年,夏六月戊戌朔,日有食之。

7The seventeenth year — great stones fall

十七年,秋八月,橫岳大石五,一時隕落。

In the seventeenth year, in autumn, the eighth month, five great stones of Hoengak fell at one time.

9The twenty-third year — frost kills the beans

二十三年,秋八月,隕霜殺菽。冬十月,雨雹。

In the twenty-third year, in autumn, the eighth month, frost fell and killed the beans. In winter, the tenth month, hail fell.

10The twenty-seventh year — a divine deer is taken

二十七年,王獵漢山,獲神鹿。

In the twenty-seventh year the king hunted at Hansan and took a divine deer.

In the twenty-ninth year an envoy was sent to Silla to ask for peace.

三十二年,春夏旱,年饑民相食。秋七月,靺鞨入牛谷,奪掠民口而歸。

In the thirty-second year, in spring and summer, there was drought, and the year brought a failed harvest and the people ate one another. In autumn, the seventh month, the Malgal came into Ugok, carried off people as plunder, and went back.

14The thirty-fifth year — the earth shakes twice

三十五年,春三月,地震。冬十月,又震。

In the thirty-fifth year, in spring, the third month, the earth shook. In winter, the tenth month, it shook again.

15The thirty-seventh year — a visit of courtesy is paid to Silla

三十七年,遣使聘新羅。

In the thirty-seventh year an envoy was sent to pay a visit of courtesy to Silla.

16The fortieth year — the Han River overflows

四十年夏四月鸛巣于都城門上六月大雨浹旬漢江水漲漂毀民屋秋七月命有司補水損之田

In the fortieth year, in summer, the fourth month, a stork built its nest above the gate of the capital. In the sixth month heavy rain fell for ten days, and the water of the Han River rose and swept away and broke down the houses of the people. In autumn, the seventh month, the office in charge was ordered to fill in the fields harmed by the water.

17The forty-ninth year — Silla is rescued

四十九年,新羅為靺鞨所侵掠,移書請兵,王遣五將軍,救之。

In the forty-ninth year Silla suffered invasion and plunder from the Malgal and sent a letter to ask for troops, and the king sent five generals to rescue them.

18The fifty-second year — King Giru dies

五十二年,冬十一月,王薨。

In the fifty-second year, in winter, the eleventh month, the king died.
