Samguk Sagi (History of the Three Kingdoms) Annals of Baekje The oldest surviving history of Korea. It is made up of the annals of Silla, Goguryeo and Baekje, together with the treatises, the tables and the biographies. Kim Busik set his own judgments here and there in passages marked as his comment, so what the compiler doubted and what he rebuked stands there still.

5The twenty-eighth year — Gilseon is taken in

二十八年春正月丙申晦日有食之冬十月新羅阿飡吉宣謀叛,事露來奔。羅王移書請之,不送。羅王怒,出師來伐。諸城堅壁,自守不出,羅兵絶糧而歸。

In the twenty-eighth year, in spring, the first month, on the last day byeongsin, the sun was eclipsed. In winter, the tenth month, Gilseon, the achan of Silla, plotted rebellion, and when the matter came to light he fled here. The king of Silla sent a letter to ask for him, but he was not sent back. The king of Silla was angry and sent out his host and came to strike. The fortresses all made their walls firm and guarded themselves and did not come out, and the Silla troops came to the end of their food and went back.

6Historian's comment — this was covering over a thief

Kim Busik comments.

In the time of the Chunqiu, Pu of the state of Ju fled to Lu, and Ji Wenzi said, "When I see one who keeps the rites toward his lord, I serve him as a filial son nourishes his father and mother. When I see one who keeps no rites toward his lord, I cut him down as the hawk chases the small birds. Looking at Pu of Ju, he does not weigh what is good but dwells in evil virtue, and therefore I drive him away."

Now Gilseon too was a crooked and thieving man, and the king of Baekje took him in and hid him. This is what is called covering over a thief and keeping him. By this he lost the goodwill of a neighboring country and wore his people out with the labor of war. His want of clear sight was great indeed.
