Samguk Sagi (History of the Three Kingdoms) Annals of Baekje The oldest surviving history of Korea. It is made up of the annals of Silla, Goguryeo and Baekje, together with the treatises, the tables and the biographies. Kim Busik set his own judgments here and there in passages marked as his comment, so what the compiler doubted and what he rebuked stands there still.

1King Chogo ascends the throne

肖古王,蓋婁王之子。蓋婁在位三十九年薨,嗣位。

King Chogo (肖古王) was a son of King Gaeru. Gaeru had been on the throne thirty-nine years when he died, and Chogo came into the throne after him.

2The second year — two fortresses on the western edge of Silla are broken

二年,秋七月,潛師襲破新羅西鄙二城,虜獲男女一千而還。八月,羅王遣一吉湌興宣,領兵二萬,來侵國東諸城。羅王又親帥精騎八千繼之,掩至漢水。王度羅兵,衆不可敵,乃還前所掠。

In the second year, in autumn, the seventh month, troops were sent out in secret and fell upon two fortresses on the western edge of Silla and broke them, and they took a thousand men and women captive and came back.

In the eighth month the king of Silla sent Heungseon the ilgilchan with twenty thousand troops to invade the fortresses in the east of the country. The king of Silla himself led eight thousand picked horsemen after him and came to the Han River. The king reckoned that the host of Silla could not be met in battle, and so he gave back what had been taken before.

3The fifth year — the border country of Silla is invaded

五年,春三月丙寅晦,日有食之。冬十月,出兵侵新羅邊鄙。

In the fifth year, in spring, the third month, on the last day byeongin, the sun was eclipsed. In winter, the tenth month, troops were sent out to invade the border country of Silla.

4The twenty-first year — a comet appears in the northwest

二十一年,冬十月,無雲而雷。星孛于西北,二十日而滅。

In the twenty-first year, in winter, the tenth month, it thundered with no cloud in the sky. A comet appeared in the northwest and was gone after twenty days.

5The twenty-second year — the wells and the Han River dry up

二十二年,夏五月,王都井及漢水皆竭。

In the twenty-second year, in summer, the fifth month, the wells of the royal capital and the Han River all dried up.

6The twenty-third year — the fortress of Mosan is attacked

二十三年,春二月,重修宮室。出師攻新羅母山城。

In the twenty-third year, in spring, the second month, the palace was repaired and rebuilt. The host was sent out and attacked the Silla fortress of Mosanseong.

7The twenty-fourth year — a defeat at Guyang

二十四年,夏四月丙午朔,日有食之。秋七月,我軍與新羅戰於狗壤,敗北,死者五百餘人。

In the twenty-fourth year, in summer, the fourth month, on the first day byeongo, the sun was eclipsed. In autumn, the seventh month, the Baekje army fought Silla at Guyang and was beaten and fled, and more than five hundred men died.

8The twenty-fifth year — a great victory at Wasan

二十五年,秋八月,出兵襲新羅西境圓山鄕,進圍缶谷城。新羅將軍仇道,帥馬兵五百,拒之。我兵佯退,仇道追至蛙山,我兵反擊之,大克。

In the twenty-fifth year, in autumn, the eighth month, troops were sent out and fell upon the village of Wonsanhyang on the western border of Silla, and they went on and surrounded the fortress of Bugokseong. Gudo, a general of Silla, led five hundred horsemen and held them off. The Baekje troops drew back as if in flight, and Gudo followed them as far as Wasan, and there the Baekje troops turned and struck him and overcame him heavily.

9The twenty-sixth year — the Chiu banner appears

二十六年,秋九月,蚩尤旗見于角、亢。

In the thirty-fourth year, in autumn, the seventh month, the earth shook. Troops were sent to invade the border country of Silla.

11The thirty-ninth year — the fortress of Yocha is taken

三十九年,秋七月,出兵攻新羅腰車城,拔之,殺其城主薛夫。羅王奈解怒,命伊伐湌利音爲將,帥六部精兵,來攻我沙峴城。冬十月,星孛于東井。

In the thirty-ninth year, in autumn, the seventh month, troops were sent out and attacked and took the Silla fortress of Yochaseong, and Seolbu, the lord of the fortress, was killed. Naehae, the king of Silla, was angry, and he ordered Ieum the ibeolchan to be his commander and to lead the picked troops of the six divisions and come to attack the Baekje fortress of Sahyeonseong. In the forty-third year, in autumn, there were locusts and drought, and the grain did not ripen well, so that robbers rose up in numbers, and the king comforted them and gave them peace.

14The forty-fourth year — a great wind tears up the trees

四十四年,冬十月,大風拔木。

15The forty-fifth year — the two fortresses of Jeokhyeon and Sado are built

四十五年,春二月,築赤峴、沙道二城,移東部民戶。冬十月,靺鞨來攻沙道城,不克,焚燒城門而遁。

In the forty-fifth year, in spring, the second month, the two fortresses of Jeokhyeon and Sado were built, and the households of the eastern division were moved there. In winter, the tenth month, the Malgal came to attack the fortress of Sadoseong. They did not overcome it, and they burned the gate of the fortress and slipped away.

16The forty-sixth year — locusts harm the grain

四十六年,秋八月,國南蝗害穀,民饑。冬十一月,無氷。

18The forty-eighth year — a white deer is offered up

四十八年,秋七月,西部人荀會獲白鹿,獻之。王以為瑞,賜穀一百石。

In the forty-eighth year, in autumn, the seventh month, Sunhoe, a man of the western division, took a white deer and offered it up. The king held it a sign of good fortune and gave him a hundred seom of grain.

19The forty-ninth year — King Chogo dies

四十九年,秋九月,命北部眞果,領兵一千,襲取靺鞨石門城。冬十月,靺鞨以勁騎來侵。至于述川。王薨。

In the forty-ninth year, in autumn, the ninth month, Jingwa of the northern division was ordered to lead a thousand troops and fall upon the Malgal fortress of Seongmunseong and take it. In winter, the tenth month, the Malgal came to invade with strong horsemen and reached Sulcheon. The king died.
