Samguk Sagi (History of the Three Kingdoms) Annals of Baekje The oldest surviving history of Korea. It is made up of the annals of Silla, Goguryeo and Baekje, together with the treatises, the tables and the biographies. Kim Busik set his own judgments here and there in passages marked as his comment, so what the compiler doubted and what he rebuked stands there still.

1King Gusu ascends the throne

仇首王,肖古王之長子,身長七尺,威儀秀異。肖古在位四十九年薨,卽位。

King Gusu (仇首王) was the eldest son of King Chogo. He was seven cheok in height, and his dignity of bearing was outstanding and beyond the common. Chogo had been on the throne forty-nine years when he died, and Gusu ascended the throne.

2The third year — the Malgal are broken below the fortress of Sado

三年,秋八月,靺鞨來圍赤峴城,城主固拒,賊退歸。王帥勁騎八百,追之,戰沙道城下,破之,殺獲甚衆。

In the third year, in autumn, the eighth month, the Malgal came to surround the fortress of Jeokhyeonseong, but the lord of the fortress held them off firmly and the raiders drew back. The king led eight hundred strong horsemen and followed after them, and he fought below the fortress of Sadoseong and broke them, and those he killed and took were very many.

3The fourth year — two palisades are set beside the fortress of Sado

四年,春二月,設二柵於沙道城側,東西相去十里,分赤峴城卒,戍之。

In the fourth year, in spring, the second month, two palisades were set beside the fortress of Sadoseong, ten li apart from east to west. The soldiers of the fortress of Jeokhyeonseong were divided to hold them.

4The fifth year — the fortress of Jangsan is surrounded

五年,王遣兵圍新羅獐山城,羅王親帥兵,擊之,我軍敗績。

In the fifth year the king sent troops to surround the Silla fortress of Jangsanseong, and the king of Silla himself led troops and struck at them, and the Baekje army was beaten.

5The seventh year — fire breaks out at the western gate

七年,冬十月,王城西門火。靺鞨寇北邊,遣兵拒之。

In the seventh year, in winter, the tenth month, fire broke out at the western gate of the royal fortress. The Malgal plundered the northern border, and troops were sent to hold them off.

6The eighth year — a great review west of the Han River

八年,夏五月,國東大水,山崩四十餘所。六月戊辰晦,日有食之。秋八月,大閱於漢水之西。

In the eighth year, in summer, the fifth month, there was a great flood in the east of the country and the hills fell away in more than forty places. In the sixth month, on the last day mujin, the sun was eclipsed. In autumn, the eighth month, there was a great review of the troops west of the Han River.

7The ninth year — the garrison at Udu is plundered

九年,春二月,命有司修隄防。三月,下令勸農事。夏六月,王都雨魚。冬十月,遣兵入新羅牛頭鎭,抄掠民戶。羅將忠萱領兵五千,逆戰於熊谷,大敗,單騎而遁。十一月,庚申晦,日有食之。

In the ninth year, in spring, the second month, the office in charge was ordered to put the dikes in order. In the third month an order went down to urge on the work of farming. In summer, the sixth month, fish rained down on the royal capital.

In winter, the tenth month, troops were sent into the garrison of Udujin in Silla and they plundered the households of the people. Chunghwon, a commander of Silla, led five thousand troops and met them in battle at Unggok. He was heavily beaten and fled alone on horseback. In the eleventh month, on the last day gyeongsin, the sun was eclipsed.

8The eleventh year — a defeat below Bongsan

十一年,秋七月,新羅一吉飡連珍來侵,我軍逆戰於烽山下,不克。冬十月,太<白晝見。

In the eleventh year, in autumn, the seventh month, Yeonjin the ilgilchan of Silla came to invade, and the Baekje army met him in battle below Bongsan but did not overcome him. In winter, the tenth month, Taebaek was seen by day.

9The fourteenth year — rain is prayed for at the shrine of Dongmyeong

十四年,春三月,雨雹。夏四月,大旱,王祈東明廟,乃雨。

In the fourteenth year, in spring, the third month, hail fell. In summer, the fourth month, there was a great drought, and the king prayed at the shrine of Dongmyeong, and then the rain came.

10The sixteenth year — a heavy defeat in the country of Ugok

十六年,冬十月,王田於寒泉。十一月,大疫。靺鞨入牛谷界,奪掠人物。王遣精兵三百,拒之。賊伏兵夾擊,我軍大敗。

In the sixteenth year, in winter, the tenth month, the king hunted at Hancheon. In the eleventh month a great pestilence went about. The Malgal came into the country of Ugok and carried off people and goods as plunder, and the king sent three hundred picked troops to hold them off. The raiders had troops lying in wait and struck them from both sides, and the Baekje army was heavily beaten.

11The eighteenth year — hail falls

十八年,夏四月,雨雹,大如栗,鳥雀中者死。

In the eighteenth year, in summer, the fourth month, hail fell as big as chestnuts, and the birds and sparrows that were struck by it died.

12The twenty-first year — King Gusu dies

二十一年,王薨。

In the twenty-first year the king died.
