Samguk Sagi (History of the Three Kingdoms) Annals of Baekje The oldest surviving history of Korea. It is made up of the annals of Silla, Goguryeo and Baekje, together with the treatises, the tables and the biographies. Kim Busik set his own judgments here and there in passages marked as his comment, so what the compiler doubted and what he rebuked stands there still.

1King Goi ascends the throne

古尒王,蓋婁王之第二子也。仇首王在位二十一年薨,長子沙伴嗣位,而幼少不能為政,肖古王母弟古尒卽位。

King Goi (古尒王) was the second son of King Gaeru. King Gusu had been on the throne twenty-one years when he died, and his eldest son Saban came into the throne after him. But he was young and could not carry on the government, and so Goi, the younger brother of King Chogo by the same mother, ascended the throne.

2The third year — forty deer are shot by the king's own hand

三年,冬十月,王獵西海大島,手射四十鹿。

In the third year, in winter, the tenth month, the king hunted on a great island in the Western Sea and shot forty deer with his own hand.

3The fifth year — a yellow dragon flies out of the gate

五年,春正月,祭天地用鼓吹。二月,田於釜山,五旬乃返。夏四月,震王宮門柱,黃龍自其門飛出。

In the fifth year, in spring, the first month, offerings were made to heaven and earth with drums and pipes. In the second month the king hunted at Busan and did not come back for fifty days. In summer, the fourth month, lightning struck the gatepost of the royal palace, and a yellow dragon flew out of that gate.

4The sixth year — the rain comes only in the fifth month

六年,春正月,不雨,至夏五月,乃雨。

In the sixth year, in spring, the first month, no rain fell, and the rain came only when summer and the fifth month had come.

5The seventh year — Jinchung is made jwajang

七年,遣兵侵新羅。夏四月,拜眞忠為左將,委以內外兵馬事。秋七月,大閱於石川。雙鴈起於川上,王射之,皆中。

In the seventh year troops were sent to invade Silla. In summer, the fourth month, Jinchung was made jwajang, and the affairs of the army within and without were given into his hands. In autumn, the seventh month, there was a great review of the troops at Seokcheon. Two wild geese rose from the bank of the stream, and the king shot at them and hit them both.

6The ninth year — rice paddies are opened in the southern marshes

九年,春二月,命國人,開稻田於南澤。夏四月,以叔父質為右輔。質性忠毅,謀事無失。秋七月,出西門觀射。

In the ninth year, in spring, the second month, the people of the country were ordered to open rice paddies in the southern marshes. In summer, the fourth month, his uncle Jil was made ubo. Jil was loyal and firm in nature, and he made no mistake in the planning of affairs. In autumn, the seventh month, the king went out to the western gate to watch the shooting of bows.

7The tenth year — a great altar is set up

十年,春正月,設大壇,祀天地山川。

In the tenth year, in spring, the first month, a great altar was set up, and offerings were made to heaven and earth and to the hills and streams.

8The thirteenth year — the border people of Nangnang are fallen upon

十三年,夏大旱,無麥。秋八月,魏幽州刺史毌丘儉與樂浪太守劉茂、帶方太守王遵,伐高句麗,王乘虛,遣左將眞忠,襲取樂浪邊民,茂聞之怒,王恐見侵討,還其民口。

In the thirteenth year, in summer, there was a great drought and there was no barley.

In autumn, the eighth month, Guanqiu Jian, the prefect of Youzhou of Wei, together with Liu Mao the governor of Nangnang and Wang Jun the governor of Daebang, struck at Goguryeo. The king took the chance while their guard was down and sent Jinchung the jwajang, who fell upon the border people of Nangnang and carried them off. Liu Mao heard of it and was angry, and the king feared that he would suffer invasion and attack, so he gave the people back.

9The fourteenth year — Jinchung is made ubo

十四年,春正月,祭天地於南壇。二月,拜眞忠為右輔,眞勿為左將,委以兵馬事。

In the fourteenth year, in spring, the first month, offerings were made to heaven and earth at the southern altar. In the second month Jinchung was made ubo and Jinmul was made jwajang, and the affairs of the army were given into their hands.

10The fifteenth year — the granaries are opened for relief

十五年,春夏,旱。冬,民饑,發倉賑恤,又復一年租調。

In the fifteenth year, in spring and summer, there was drought. In winter the people went hungry, and the granaries were opened to relieve them, and a year's taxes and labor service were remitted as well.

11The sixteenth year — Taebaek covers the moon

十六年,春正月甲午,太白襲月。

In the sixteenth year, in spring, the first month, on the day gabo, Taebaek covered the moon.

12The twenty-second year — a victory west of Goegok

二十二年,秋九月,出師侵新羅,與羅兵戰於槐谷西,敗之,殺其將翊宗。冬十月,遣兵攻新羅烽山城,不克。

In the twenty-second year, in autumn, the ninth month, the host went out to invade Silla. They fought the Silla troops west of Goegok and broke them, and killed their commander Ikjong. In winter, the tenth month, troops were sent to attack the Silla fortress of Bongsanseong, but they did not overcome it.

13The twenty-fourth year — there is a great drought

二十四年,春正月,大旱,樹木皆枯。

In the twenty-fourth year, in spring, the first month, there was a great drought and the trees all withered.

14The twenty-fifth year — the Malgal offer up fine horses

二十五年,春,靺鞨長羅渴獻良馬十匹,王優勞使者以還之。

In the twenty-fifth year, in spring, Nagal, a chief of the Malgal, offered up ten fine horses, and the king comforted his messenger generously and sent him back.

15The twenty-sixth year — clouds rise east of the palace

二十六年,秋九月,靑紫雲起宮東,如樓閣。

In the twenty-sixth year, in autumn, the ninth month, blue and purple clouds rose east of the palace, and they were like a tower.

16The twenty-seventh year — six jwapyeong and sixteen grades are set up

二十七年,春正月,置內臣佐平,掌宣納事;內頭佐平,掌庫藏事;內法佐平,掌禮儀事;衛士佐平,掌宿衛兵事;朝廷佐平,掌刑獄事;兵官佐平,掌外兵馬事。又置達率、恩率、德率、扞率、奈率及將德、施德、固德、季德、對德、文督、武督、佐軍、振武、克虞。六佐平並一品,達率二品,恩率三品,德率四品,扞率五品,奈率六品,將德七品,施德八品,固德九品,季德十品,對德十一品,文督十二品,武督十三品,佐軍十四品,振武十五品,克虞十六品。二月,下令六品已上服紫,以銀花飾冠,十一品已上服緋,十六品已上服靑。三月,以王弟優壽為內臣佐平。

In the twenty-seventh year, in spring, the first month, the naesin jwapyeong was set up to take charge of sending out and taking in the king's words; the naedu jwapyeong to take charge of the storehouses; the naebeop jwapyeong to take charge of rites and ceremony; the wisa jwapyeong to take charge of the guard and the soldiers; the jojeong jwapyeong to take charge of punishments and prisons; and the byeonggwan jwapyeong to take charge of the army outside.

There were set up also the dalsol, the eunsol, the deoksol, the hansol and the nasol, and the jangdeok, the sideok, the godeok, the gyedeok, the daedeok, the mundok, the mudok, the jwagun, the jinmu and the geugu. The six jwapyeong were all of the first grade, the dalsol of the second grade, the eunsol of the third, the deoksol of the fourth, the hansol of the fifth, the nasol of the sixth, the jangdeok of the seventh, the sideok of the eighth, the godeok of the ninth, the gyedeok of the tenth, the daedeok of the eleventh, the mundok of the twelfth, the mudok of the thirteenth, the jwagun of the fourteenth, the jinmu of the fifteenth, and the geugu of the sixteenth.

In the second month an order went down that those of the sixth grade and above should wear purple and adorn their caps with silver flowers, that those of the eleventh grade and above should wear crimson, and that those of the sixteenth grade and above should wear blue.

In the third month the king's younger brother Usu was made naesin jwapyeong.

17The twenty-eighth year — the king sits in the southern hall and hears the government

二十八年,春正月初吉,王服紫大袖袍、靑錦袴、金花飾烏羅冠、素皮帶、烏韋革履,坐南堂聽事。二月,拜眞可為內頭佐平;優豆為內法佐平;高壽為衛士佐平;昆奴為朝廷佐平;惟己為兵官佐平。三月,遣使新羅請和,不從。

In the twenty-eighth year, in spring, on the first day of the first month, the king wore a purple robe with great sleeves and trousers of blue brocade, a cap of black silk adorned with gold flowers, a belt of white leather and shoes of black leather, and he sat in the southern hall and heard the business of the government.

In the second month Jinga was made naedu jwapyeong, Udu naebeop jwapyeong, Gosu wisa jwapyeong, Gonno jojeong jwapyeong, and Yugi byeonggwan jwapyeong.

In the third month an envoy was sent to Silla to ask for peace, but they did not agree.

18The twenty-ninth year — those who take bribes are barred from office for life

二十九年,春正月,下令:凡官人受財及盜者,三倍徵贓,禁錮終身。

In the twenty-ninth year, in spring, the first month, an order went down. "Whatever officeholder takes goods or steals them shall pay back threefold what he took, and shall be barred from office for life."

19The thirty-third year — the fortress of Bongsan is attacked

三十三年,秋八月,遣兵,攻新羅烽山城。城主直宣率壯士二百人,出擊敗之。

In the thirty-third year, in autumn, the eighth month, troops were sent to attack the Silla fortress of Bongsanseong. Jikseon, the lord of the fortress, led two hundred stout soldiers out, struck them, and broke them.

20The thirty-sixth year — a comet appears at Jagung

三十六年,秋九月,星孛于紫宮。

In the thirty-sixth year, in autumn, the ninth month, a comet appeared at Jagung.

21The thirty-ninth year — Silla is invaded

三十九年,冬十一月,遣兵侵新羅。

In the thirty-ninth year, in winter, the eleventh month, troops were sent to invade Silla.

22The forty-fifth year — the fortress of Goegok is surrounded

四十五年,冬十月,出兵攻新羅,圍槐谷城。

In the forty-fifth year, in winter, the tenth month, troops went out and attacked Silla and surrounded the fortress of Goegokseong.

23The fiftieth year — the border country of Silla is invaded

五十年,秋九月,遣兵侵新羅邊境。

In the fiftieth year, in autumn, the ninth month, troops were sent to invade the border country of Silla.

24The fifty-third year — King Goi dies

五十三年,春正月,遣使新羅請和。冬十一月,王薨。

In the fifty-third year, in spring, the first month, an envoy was sent to Silla to ask for peace. In winter, the eleventh month, the king died.
