Samguk Sagi (History of the Three Kingdoms) 三國史記 · Kim Busik and others · 1145 (Goryeo, 23rd year of King Injong) · 7 passages · 346 Chinese characters · reading time 1.4 min

Samguk Sagi (History of the Three Kingdoms) Annals of Baekje The oldest surviving history of Korea. It is made up of the annals of Silla, Goguryeo and Baekje, together with the treatises, the tables and the biographies. Kim Busik set his own judgments here and there in passages marked as his comment, so what the compiler doubted and what he rebuked stands there still.

1King Geungusu ascends the throne

King Geungusu (近仇首王) was the son of King Geunchogo.

Before this, Sayu, King Gukgang of Goguryeo, came himself to raid, and King Geunchogo sent the crown prince to hold him off. They came to Bangeollyang and were about to fight. A man of Goguryeo named Sagi was by birth a man of Baekje, and he had hurt the hoof of a horse of the country by mistake and had fled over to that side for fear of punishment. Now he came back and told the crown prince, "Their army is many, but they are all sham troops set there to fill up the number. The bold and the brave among them are only the red banners. If those are broken first, the rest will fall apart without being attacked."

The crown prince followed his word and went forward and struck and broke them greatly, and he chased the runaways and drove the beaten men as far as the northwest of Sugokseong.

Makgohae the general remonstrated with him and said, "I heard once a saying of the Daoists: 'He who knows when he has enough is not shamed, and he who knows when to stop is not endangered.' What we have got now is much. Why must we seek for more?"

The crown prince thought well of it and stopped there. Then he piled up stones for a marker, and he went up on it and looked round at those about him and said, "After this day, who will be able to come here again?" There is a rock in that place with a crack in it like the hoof of a horse, and other people call it the mark of the crown prince's horse to this day.

Geunchogo had been on the throne thirty years when he died, and then he ascended the throne.
