Samguk Sagi (History of the Three Kingdoms) Annals of Baekje The oldest surviving history of Korea. It is made up of the annals of Silla, Goguryeo and Baekje, together with the treatises, the tables and the biographies. Kim Busik set his own judgments here and there in passages marked as his comment, so what the compiler doubted and what he rebuked stands there still.

1King Jinsa ascends the throne

辰斯王,近仇首王之仲子,枕流之弟。為人强勇,聰惠多智略。枕流之薨也,太子少,故叔父辰斯卽位。

King Jinsa (辰斯王) was the second son of King Geungusu and the younger brother of Chimnyu. He was firm and brave as a man, and he was bright and wise and full of plans. When Chimnyu died, the crown prince was young, and so his uncle Jinsa ascended the throne.

2The second year — a line of defense is set up

二年,春,發國內人年十五歲已上,設關防,自靑木嶺,北距八坤城,西至於海。秋七月,隕霜害穀。八月,高句麗來侵。

In the second year, in spring, the people of the country fifteen years old and over were called up and a line of defense was set up. It ran from Cheongmongnyeong north as far as Palgonseong and west to the sea. In autumn, the seventh month, frost fell and harmed the grain. In the eighth month Goguryeo came and raided.

3The third year — the battle at Gwanmiryeong is lost

三年,春正月,拜眞嘉謨為達率,豆知為恩率。秋九月,與靺鞨戰關彌嶺,不捷。

In the third year, in spring, the first month, Jin Gamo was made dalsol and Duji was made eunsol. In autumn, the ninth month, there was a battle with the Malgal at Gwanmiryeong, and it was not won.

4The fifth year — the southern border of Goguryeo is plundered

五年,秋九月,王遣兵,侵掠高句麗南鄙。

In the fifth year, in autumn, the ninth month, the king sent troops and raided and plundered the southern border of Goguryeo.

5The sixth year — Dogonseong is taken

六年,秋七月,星孛于北河。九月,王命達率眞嘉謨,伐高句麗,拔都坤城,虜得二百人。王拜嘉謨為兵官佐平。冬十月,獵於狗原,七日乃返。

In the sixth year, in autumn, the seventh month, a comet appeared at Bukha. In the ninth month the king commanded Jin Gamo the dalsol to attack Goguryeo, and he took Dogonseong and carried off two hundred people. The king made Gamo byeonggwan jwapyeong. In winter, the tenth month, he hunted at Guwon and came back only after seven days.

6The seventh year — a pond is dug and a hill is made

七年,春正月,重修宮室,穿池造山,以養奇禽異卉。夏四月,靺鞨攻陷北鄙赤峴城。秋七月,獵國西大島,王親射鹿。八月,又獵橫岳之西。

In the seventh year, in spring, the first month, the palace buildings were made over again, and a pond was dug and a hill was made, and strange birds and rare plants were kept there. In summer, the fourth month, the Malgal attacked Jeokhyeonseong on the northern border and took it. In autumn, the seventh month, there was hunting on a great island in the west of the country, and the king shot a deer with his own hand. In the eighth month there was hunting again west of Hoengak.

7The eighth year — fortresses are lost to Damdeok and the king dies

八年,夏五月丁卯朔,日有食之。秋七月,高句麗王談德,帥兵四萬,來攻北鄙,陷石峴等十餘城。王聞談德能用兵,不得出拒,漢水北諸部落,多沒焉。冬十月,高句麗攻拔關彌城。王田於狗原,經旬不返。十一月,薨於狗原行宮。

In the eighth year, in summer, the fifth month, on the first day, a jeongmyo day, the sun was eclipsed.

In autumn, the seventh month, Damdeok, the king of Goguryeo, led forty thousand troops and came and attacked the northern border, and he took more than ten fortresses, Seokhyeon among them. The king heard that Damdeok was good at the use of troops, and he could not go out to hold him off, and many of the settlements north of the Han River were lost.

In winter, the tenth month, Goguryeo attacked Gwanmiseong and took it. The king was hunting at Guwon and did not come back though ten days had passed, and in the eleventh month he died at the traveling palace at Guwon.
