Geography 2 — Silla地理二新羅

Hanju (漢州) was in its origin the Goguryeo commandery of Hansan. Silla took it, and King Gyeongdeok changed it to Hanju. It is the present Gwangju. It had two counties under it.

Hwangmu-hyeon (黃武縣) was in its origin the Goguryeo county of Namcheon. Silla joined it to itself, King Jinheung made it a province and set a gunju there, and King Gyeongdeok changed the name. It is the present Icheon-hyeon. Geoseo-hyeon (巨黍縣) was in its origin the Goguryeo county of Guseong. King Gyeongdeok changed the name. It is the present Yonggu-hyeon.

Jungwongyeong (中原京) was in its origin the Goguryeo fortress of Gugwon, and Silla subdued it. King Jinheung set up a lesser capital there, and in the time of King Munmu a wall was built, going round two thousand five hundred and ninety-two paces. King Gyeongdeok changed it to Jungwongyeong. It is the present Chungju.

The fourth ruler, Gwangjong, founded Burilsa on that ground and moved the county to the northeast. Gangeum-hyeon (江陰縣) was in its origin the Goguryeo county of Gurap. Gyodong-hyeon (喬桐縣) was in its origin the Goguryeo county of Gomokgeun, and it is an island in the sea. King Gyeongdeok changed the name. It remains so today. Tosan-hyeon (土山縣) was in its origin the Goguryeo Sikdal. King Heondeok changed the name. It remains so today. Dangak-hyeon (唐嶽縣) was in its origin the Goguryeo Gahwaap. King Heondeok set up a county there and changed the name. It is the present Junghwa-hyeon. Songhyeon-hyeon (松峴縣) was in its origin the Goguryeo county of Busapaui. King Heondeok changed the name. Today it belongs to Junghwa-hyeon.

Of Sakju (朔州) the Gujin junguo zhi of Jia Dan says, "It is to the southeast of Goguryeo and to the west of Ye, the old land of Maek, and it is probably the present Sakju in the north of Silla." In the sixth year of Queen Seondeok, the eleventh year of Zhenguan of Tang, it was made Usuju and a gunju was set there. (It is also said that in the thirteenth year of King Munmu, the fourth year of Xianheng of Tang, Suyakju was set up.) King Gyeongdeok changed it to Sakju. It is the present Chunju. It had three counties under it.

Nokhyo-hyeon (綠驍縣) was in its origin the Goguryeo county of Beollyeokcheon. King Gyeongdeok changed the name. It is the present Hongcheon-hyeon. Hwangcheon-hyeon (潢川縣) was in its origin the Goguryeo county of Hoengcheon. King Gyeongdeok changed the name. Today it has gone back to its old name. Jipyeong-hyeon (砥平縣) was in its origin the Goguryeo county of Jihyeon. King Gyeongdeok changed the name. It remains so today.

Bugwongyeong (北原京) was in its origin the Goguryeo commandery of Pyeongwon. King Munmu set up the lesser capital of Bugwon there, and in the fifth year of King Sinmun a wall was built, going round one thousand and thirty-one paces. King Gyeongdeok left it as it was. It is the present Wonju.

Seongok-hyeon (善谷縣) was in its origin the Goguryeo county of Maegok. King Gyeongdeok changed the name. Where it is today is not clear. Ongma-hyeon (玉馬縣) was in its origin the Goguryeo county of Gosama. King Gyeongdeok changed the name. It is the present Bonghwa-hyeon.

Geupsan-gun (岋山郡) was in its origin the Goguryeo commandery of Geupbeolsan. King Gyeongdeok changed the name. It is the present Heungju. It had one county under it.

Inpung-hyeon (鄰豐縣) was in its origin the Goguryeo county of Ibeolji. King Gyeongdeok changed the name. Where it is today is not clear.

King Gyeongdeok changed the name. Where it is today is not clear. Sangeum-hyeon (霜陰縣) was in its origin the Goguryeo county of Salhan. King Gyeongdeok changed the name. It remains so today. Myeongju (溟州) was in its origin the Goguryeo Haseoryang (also written Haseulla), and afterward it belonged to Silla. The Gujin junguo zhi of Jia Dan says, "Myeongju, on the northern border of Silla today, is probably the old state of Ye." The earlier histories that made Buyeo the land of Ye were probably wrong.

In the time of Queen Seondeok it was made a lesser capital and a sasin was set there. In the fifth year of King Taejong, the third year of Xianqing of Tang, because the land of Haseulla touched the Malgal, the capital was done away with and it was made a province, and a gunju was set there to hold it. In the sixteenth year of King Gyeongdeok it was changed to Myeongju, and it remains so today. It had four counties under it.

Dongsan-hyeon (童山縣) was in its origin the Goguryeo county of Seungsan. King Gyeongdeok changed the name. It is the present Yeolsan-hyeon. Ingnyeong-hyeon (翼嶺縣) was in its origin the Goguryeo county of Ikhyeon. King Gyeongdeok changed the name. It remains so today.

Goseong-gun (高城郡) was in its origin the Goguryeo Dalhol. In the twenty-ninth year of King Jinheung it was made a province and a gunju was set there. King Gyeongdeok changed the name. It remains so today. It had two counties under it.

Hwanga-hyeon (豢猳縣) was in its origin the Goguryeo county of Jeosuhyeol. King Gyeongdeok changed the name. It remains so today. Pyeonheom-hyeon (偏嶮縣) was in its origin the Goguryeo county of Pyeongjinhyeon. King Gyeongdeok changed the name. It is the present Unam-hyeon.

Geumyang-gun (金壤郡) was in its origin the Goguryeo commandery of Hyuyang. King Gyeongdeok changed the name. It remains so today. It had five counties under it.

Seupgye-hyeon (習谿縣) was in its origin the Goguryeo county of Seupbigok. King Gyeongdeok changed the name. It is the present Heupgok-hyeon. Jesang-hyeon (隄上縣) was in its origin the Goguryeo county of Tosang. King Gyeongdeok changed the name. It is the present Byeoksan-hyeon. Imdo-hyeon (臨道縣) was in its origin the Goguryeo county of Dorim. King Gyeongdeok changed the name. It remains so today. Pacheon-hyeon (派川縣) was in its origin the Goguryeo county of Gaeyeon.
